MAJOR JOB FUNCTIONS

The following is a summary of the major essential functions of the job. The incumbent may be assigned additional duties, both major and minor, that are not mentioned below. Based on department needs, the Medical Director may assign duties to include inpatient, outpatient, emergency department, or consultation/liaison responsibilities.

Responsibilities:

1. Maintain an active clinical practice providing appropriate care to patients according to current standards of care.

a. Physician shall provide care to appropriate patients as provided in the definition of specialty privileges including child, adolescent and adult psychiatry.

b. Physician shall be available to care for patients, both as an outpatient or inpatient.

c. Physician shall take an appropriate history and perform an appropriate physical examination on all patients prior to rendering treatment.

d. Physician shall be responsible for admitting the patient and caring for that patient throughout their hospitalization. In the event another physician assumes call and responsibility for the patient, the Physician shall be responsible for providing the covering physician with the appropriate information to care for the patient. If the Physician is unavailable to care for the patient, he/she must be responsible for arranging appropriate coverage by an equally qualified and credentialed physician. Physician shall round at least once daily or make arrangements for another qualified physician to round at least once daily on all patients remaining as inpatients in CFVHS that had been admitted by Physician, or the patients of other physicians for whom he/she is the covering physician.

e. If, in the opinion of the Physician, a patient needs to be transferred to another facility for specialty care, the Physician shall be responsible for the following:

1. Assuring that the risks and benefits of the transfer have been explained to the patient and patient's family.

2. Assuring that, in the opinion of the Physician, the risks of the transfer are outweighed by the benefits of the transfer.

3. Assuring that a physician at the receiving hospital has been contacted and has accepted the patient.

4. Assuring that the receiving hospital has an available bed for the patient.

5. Assuring that all appropriate medical center forms have been completed.

6. Assuring that the patient has been stabilized as much as possible.

f. Physician must be available to treat and respond in a timely manner to the Emergency Department when consulted by the Emergency Department Physician. However, Physician may elect to see their patients in the Emergency Department if requested by the family of the patient or the patient themselves.

g. Assist in clarification of diagnoses, including resolution of inconsistencies.

h. Assure that appropriate referrals for further medical evaluations and testing are made.

i. Provide informal supervision and consultation for other clinical providers of Behavioral Health Care.

2. Physician shall participate in an ongoing practice call schedule. This schedule must be sufficient to provide twenty-four (24) hour a day emergency coverage, 365 days a year.

a. Physician shall work with other physicians in the practice(s) to ensure coverage while out on "paid time off" (PTO).

3. Physician shall participate in Cape Fear Valley Health System’s (CFVHS) Emergency Department medicine call rotation, if necessary.

4. Physician shall participate as a staff member of CFVHS and comply with all provisions, regulations, and department bylaws. Including without reservation:

a. Physician shall maintain legible, patient medical records in accordance with standard protocol;

b. Physician shall, upon request, provide formal medical supervision to mid-level practitioners; and

c. Physician shall take necessary steps to assure the complete, accurate, and timely charging of all patient services rendered.

5. Physician shall cooperate with billing, managed care, performance improvement, utilization, and risk management efforts on behalf of CFVHS, including membership in assigned Medical Staff Committees.

6. Attend all required meetings of Hospital and/or related departments or medical staff and serve as medical representative as assigned by the Medical Director.

7. Assist the Medical Director in the coordination and clinical management of activities in support of the philosophy, policies, and procedures as adopted and established by Hospital’s administration and Board of Trustees.

8. Perform duties and responsibilities in a manner consistent with the mission and vision of CFVHS.

9. Physician shall participate in Graduate Medical Education activities as directed.

10. Physician shall actively work with the Medical Director of Psychiatric Services and the Administrator to assure the practice's fiscal soundness and monitor attainment of established budget.

11. Physician shall actively assist his/her Medical Director of Psychiatric Services and the Administrator in implementing productivity goals for their practice including building the practice to achieve those goals. Practice building activities include but are not limited to, participating in health fairs; verbally marketing the office to the community, businesses, etc.; conducting health education presentations; and covering additional call days, if assigned. These activities may be held in the evening, after normal clinic hours, and/or on weekends.

12. Physician shall provide telemedicine services to associated entities throughout Cumberland County Hospital System, Inc. in accordance with the Shared Services Agreement and Telemedicine Credentialing Agreement with each such entity.

QUALIFICATIONS

The following qualifications, or equivalent, are the minimum requirements necessary to perform the essential function of this job. Physician must successfully acquire and maintain full credentials and privileges with HHS Medical Staff.

Education Requirements

Graduate from accredited medical school.

Successful completion of postgraduate medical training in an ACGME accredited residency.

Possession of a license to practice medicine in North Carolina and a valid Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) certificate.

Minimum Experience, Knowledge, Skill, and Ability Requirements

Machinery, Tools, Equipment, and Work Aids

Transcription equipment, medical/laboratory equipment, and supplies.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Physician must present a professional image and shall exhibit excellent interpersonal skills by interacting with tact and diplomacy with all medical office and hospital employees, physician colleagues, patients and visitors, insurance companies, and other outside organizations. Physician must be results-oriented, exemplify a team player attitude, and be willing to work a flexible schedule in order to meet patient needs. Physician must always demonstrate strong written and verbal communication skills, and must possess excellent clinical skills. Physician must also possess the following physical abilities: sufficient speech and auditory acuity to discharge clinical, professional, and administrative responsibilities; sufficient visual acuity for patient observation; sufficient manual dexterity for clinical exams and for assisting with minor surgical procedures; and sufficient mobility to execute clinical responsibilities.
