Position Overview: Facilitates the operative or other invasive procedure by preparing and providing the required Responsible for overseeing, leading, and managing the surgical and sterile processing technicians.

Responsibilities:

Support the mission, vision, and values of the organization.

Efficiently and effectively assists physician with operative procedures.

Anticipates surgeon/physician's need both in preparing for procedures and during procedures.

Demonstrates knowledge of specific responsibilities in all emergency situations.

Function as a scrub person during operative and other invasive procedures by

assembling supplies and equipment required for the procedure;

preparing and organizing sterile supplies and instruments for the procedure;

gowning and gloving surgeon and other members of the OR team;

handles instruments in a manner which prolongs "life" of instruments.

assists circulating nurse in gathering necessary surgical supplies and equipment. Is responsibility for completing sponge, needle, and sharps count preoperatively and postoperatively with the RN circulator;

retains all specimens to be sent to pathology, confirming source/name of specimen with surgeon.

assisting with placement of sterile drapes;

assists in keeping physician preference cards accurate/updated.

providing instruments and supplies to the surgical team during the procedure;

maintaining an organized sterile field;

ensuring sterility of the field and taking corrective actions as needed; and

preparing sterile dressings.

Clean and prepare surgical instruments for processing and transport them to the decontam.

Assist with pre and post-procedure cleaning of the operative or other invasive procedure room and preparation of room for subsequent patients.

Follow established, evidenced-based protocols and manufacturer's instructions for point of use cleaning, decontaminating, preparing and packaging and disinfecting or sterilizing, and storing medical and surgical supplies and equipment as requested.

Distribute medical and surgical supplies from sterile processing areas to other areas within the facility as needed.

Adhere to standard precautions including the use of appropriate hand hygiene, appropriate personal protective equipment and safe practices to ensure patient safety, personal safety and a safe environment.

Follow safety procedures and manufacturer's instructions when handling cleaning solutions, supplies and equipment.

Operate equipment safely and according to the manufacturer's instructions for use.

Monitor, interpret, and document results of physical, chemical, and biological indicators for sterilizers.

Prepare and distribute surgical case trays and equipment according to physician's preference cards and anticipate needs of the perioperative team.

Participate in ongoing educational and competency verification activities applicable to scrub person activities.

Maintain privacy and confidentiality of individuals and health information.

Inventory, receive, and restock materials used for work area.

Assist with improving the quality of perioperative services.

Assist with identifying pertinent evidence to establish benchmarks as directed.

Qualifications:

Required:

Graduate of Accredited Surgical Technology Program

Certified surgical technologist (CST) within one year of employment

Basic Life Support (BLS) certification

Preferred:

One year of one surgical technician experience; preferably in ophthalmic surgery.

Computer skills (eg, Microsoft® PowerPoint, Word, Excel)
