Director of Operations, Heavy Civil Construction

Overview:

The Mid-Atlantic division of a large heavy civil general contracting company is looking for a Director of Operations in the Falls Church, VA area. This division is the region’s most prominent general contractor in the heavy highway and bridge construction area. The company has consistently tackled some of the region’s largest and most challenging projects with safety, reliability, and efficiency. Their expertise spans multiple core segments of the heavy highway and bridge construction arena, across Maryland, Virginia and Washington DC.

Day to Day:

The Director of Ops will take on a #2 role to the COO. They will play a pivotal role in managing and optimizing the operational aspects of the ongoing projects and supporting the expansion of the company into the rest of the Mid-Atlantic region. The Director of Ops is responsible for ensuring efficient project execution through effective operations oversight of health and safety, risk management, stakeholder communication, leadership, team development, and compliance. This role requires a heavy civil executive with a strategic mindset along with strong leadership skills and business acumen.

Responsibilities include:

Strategic Planning: Collaborate with the senior filed, PM and office managers to develop and implement strategic plans to achieve operational objectives and company growth targets.

Health and Safety: Ensure that health and safety protocols and procedures are implemented and followed rigorously across all projects, promoting a culture of safety awareness and compliance.

Operations Oversight: Oversee the program of projects and lead the charge in addressing resource constraints, high level budget and schedule tracking, compliance and claim and change order management to ensure adherence to the planning and execution targets set by the executive team.

Risk Management: Identify potential risks and develop strategies to mitigate them, ensuring project success and minimizing liabilities.

Stakeholder Communication: Serve as one of the primary points of contact for clients, subcontractors, suppliers, and regulatory agencies, fostering positive relationships and resolving issues promptly.

Leadership and Team Development: Provide strong leadership to project teams, fostering a culture of collaboration, accountability, and continuous improvement. Mentor and develop staff to enhance their skills and capabilities.

Compliance: Ensure compliance with all relevant laws, regulations, permits, and contractual obligations, maintaining the highest standards of ethics and integrity.

Must Have:

10+ years of experience in heavy civil construction

5+ years of experience of people and project management

Strong understanding of structural engineering, structural rehabilitation techniques and best practices

Exceptional organizational and analytical skills, with the ability to effectively collaborate with diverse stakeholders and build consensus

Demonstrated ability to lead and motivate cross-functional teams, fostering a culture of high performance and continuous improvement

Broad knowledge of safety regulations, quality standards, and industry best practices

Ability to travel to project sites throughout the Mid-Atlantic as needed, to support geographic expansion in the area.

Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or a related field. An advanced business degree or relevant experience exhibiting strong business acumen

Government contracting experience (strongly preferred)
