Job Description

The Orthodontic Assistant is an integral member of the orthodontic team, providing chairside support to orthodontists and orthodontic technicians while assisting with various clinical and administrative tasks. This role requires a combination of technical skills, patient care expertise, and organizational abilities to ensure efficient orthodontic procedures and a positive patient experience. The Orthodontic Assistant works closely with the orthodontist to assist with patient care, orthodontic procedures, and office management tasks.

Key Responsibilities:

Chairside Assistance:

Prepare treatment areas for orthodontic procedures, including setting up instruments, equipment, and materials.

Assist the orthodontist during patient examinations, orthodontic adjustments, and appliance placements, providing chairside support and anticipating the orthodontist's needs.

Hand instruments and materials to the orthodontist, maintain proper suction and ensure patient comfort during procedures.

Educate patients on oral hygiene practices, appliance care instructions, and treatment progress as directed by the orthodontist.

Orthodontic Procedures:

Take orthodontic records, including digital photographs, dental impressions, and intraoral scans, for treatment planning and progress monitoring.

Assist with the placement and removal of orthodontic appliances, including braces, clear aligners, expanders, and retainers.

Perform preliminary adjustments to orthodontic appliances under the direction of the orthodontist, such as wire changes and ligature adjustments.

Monitor patient progress and document clinical observations, treatment notes, and appliance changes in patient records.

Sterilization and Infection Control:

Follow strict infection control protocols to maintain a sterile environment in the orthodontic clinic, including proper sterilization of instruments and disinfection of surfaces.

Clean and sterilize orthodontic instruments and equipment using autoclaves and ultrasonic cleaners.

Ensure compliance with infection control guidelines and regulatory standards to protect the health and safety of patients and staff.

Patient Care and Education:

Welcome patients to the orthodontic clinic and assist with seating and preparation for treatment.

Provide compassionate care and support to patients, addressing any concerns or questions they may have about their orthodontic treatment.

Educate patients on proper oral hygiene techniques, dietary guidelines, and lifestyle habits to promote optimal oral health and treatment outcomes.

Communicate effectively with patients and their families, providing guidance and encouragement throughout the orthodontic treatment process.

Administrative Support:

Assist with administrative tasks such as scheduling appointments, managing patient records, and processing insurance claims.

Coordinate patient consultations, follow-up appointments, and treatment plans, ensuring seamless communication between the orthodontic team and patients.

Handle phone calls, inquiries, and correspondence from patients, referring dentists, and other healthcare providers in a professional and courteous manner.

Qualifications:

High school diploma or equivalent required; completion of a dental assisting or orthodontic assisting program REQUIRED.

X-ray license and Hep B shots required.

Previous experience working in a dental or orthodontic setting is advantageous.

Knowledge of orthodontic terminology, procedures, and appliance types.

Familiarity with digital imaging systems and orthodontic software (e.g., Dolphin Imaging, Ortho2) is beneficial.

Strong interpersonal skills and ability to communicate effectively with patients of all ages.

Attention to detail and ability to multitask in a fast-paced clinical environment.

Commitment to maintaining patient confidentiality and upholding ethical standards of practice.
