Summary:

Position Overview: STEP Student Coordinators (STUCO) position reports directly to the NODA Intern and the Assistant Director for Student Success, Transition, & Retention. The STUCO’s are responsible for overall support of STEP operations. During the summer STEP cohort, the STUCO’s will work in conjunction with the Center for Diversity & Inclusion staff as well as campus partners.

Dates of Employment: June 10, 2024 – August 16, 2024

Essential Functions:

The STEP STUCO position will proactively implement as well as assist the staff of CDI with tasks including but not limited to the following:

Coordinate with the CDI staff and campus partners to complete the meeting room and event set up process.

Communicate with partners (on and off campus), guest speakers, STEP cohort and CDI staff about workshops, cluster groups, excursions, etc.

Complete the room check process to ensure that a room is clean and ready for occupancy, as needed.

Monitor and maintain the condition of UCGS facilities, furniture and equipment, and report problems as they arise.

Understand operational capabilities and best usage of spaces virtual or physical, on and off campus as needed for workshops, trainings, etc.

Provide a high level of customer service to all participants and families of the STEP cohort.

Create community building opportunities for STEP cohort.

Manage portion of STEP budget for activities as deemed appropriate.

Each STUCO will serve in an on-call rotation and will respond to afterhours STEP cohort student concerns as appropriate.

Understand, enforce, and adhere to all relevant policies/procedures as set forth by University Conference & Guest Services, the Student Code of Conduct, CDI, and American University.

Assist with clean up and organization with STEP.

Other duties as assigned.

Staffing Expectations:

This is a live in position for the onboarding and program dates relating to STEP.

All STEP Coordinators must be available for all training sessions, which begin on Monday, June 10, 2024.

Move in will be June 8-9th.

Attend and be on time for all training, workshops, staff meetings, and events.

Submit timecards timely and by due date. Communicate any concerns related to your timecards ASPA.

Understand that each staff member must work the required number of hours (30 hours/week) and that no staff member may work more than the allowed number of hours (35 hours/week) without special circumstance.

Help to ensure logistics of day, evening, and weekend events are completed.

Be present for all shifts, on-call, and supplemental appearances as scheduled and/or assigned.

Attending weekly one-on-one meetings with supervisor NODA & Assistant Director for Student Success, Transition, and Retention.

Participate in a STEP Evaluation with the Associate Director for Student Equity, Access, and Retention at the end of the summer. This will be the week of August 12-16th.

Complete aspects of the STEP Wrap Up Report in conjunction with Noda Intern and Assistant Director for Student Success, Transition, & Retention.

The first draft will be turned into the Associate Director for Student Equity, Access, and Retention on Monday, August 5th.

The final draft will be turned into the Associate Director for Student Equity, Access, and Retention on Monday, August 12th.

Staff & Community Standards:

Encourage and maintain a community atmosphere where the rights and responsibilities of staff, STEP students, and guests are held in high regard. Encourage the development of staff and STEP ‘team’ and actively work to address tensions/interpersonal issues of the STEP students as they arise.

Required to create a welcoming environment for guests and maintain standards for a high level of customer service.

Participate in STEP community building and some workshop/educational activities and encourage the participation and involvement of all summer STEP students.

Qualifications:

Excellent administrative, organizational, interpersonal and customer service skills. Previous participation or involvement in STEP program is not required.

Skills in planning, implementing, budgeting, task management, conflict resolution, and goal setting.

Possess a proactive and creative mindset yet also able to work well in a team atmosphere.

Ability to represent American University by means of a respectful and accountable disposition, a positive attitude, and quick response.

Position Requirements:

Must be enrolled at AU and have good academic standing with a GPA of 3.0.

Must work at least 30-35 hours/week, unless STEP summer schedule needs dictate otherwise. Be available to work immediately beginning June 10, 2024 until August 16th, 2024 unless exception approved by the CDI staff team or their designee.

Maintain flexible hours to coincide with the summer housing schedule and be available for on-call responsibilities.

Knowledge of American University and Washington, DC area preferred.

Hiring is contingent on the successful completion of a background check and judicial academic records.

Must live in residence halls during summer months. Live-in staff members are expected to be available for all scheduled assignments and projects, and are expected to be accessible in person, by phone, or by e-mail to answer questions, respond to emergency situations, and to perform other administrative tasks and projects as needed.

Full attendance at mandatory summer onboarding, training sessions, and staff meetings .

Compensation:

$17.10 per hour for at least 25-30 hours of work per week from June to August summer employment. Housing in a single or double room (single occupancy) from Tuesday June 10, 2024 through Friday August 16, 2024. Staff will be expected to move on dates assigned by AU Housing & Residence Life staff.
