Title: Buyer - Consumables

Reports to: DMM

Oversees: Assistant and Associate Buyers

Objective: Responsible to deliver the sales and profit plan for a specific area through the precise execution of a well-conceived merchandise strategy. Think and act like an owner: fully utilizing intellect, creativity and experience. Demonstrate a strong work ethic and a commitment to our customer, our people and the company.

Qualifications:

A minimum of 5-7 years of experience

Previous merchandising experience overseeing consumables categories for a multi-outlet retailer: Candy, Food/Beverage, Household Essentials, Personal Care, or Beauty required

Bachelor’s degree required

Analytical and Data-Driven

Must possess demonstrable knowledge of evolving trends

Must have strong negotiation skills

Proficiency in MS Office Suite

Experience leading a team and developing assistant and/or associate buyers

Entrepreneurial team player and cross-functional contributor

Ability to embrace 5 core company values

Must be willing to travel

Demonstrate ability to excel in a fast-paced environment while adopting mentality of “let go & have fun”

Must be Philadelphia based or willing to relocate to the Philadelphia area

Job Responsibilities:

Assortment Execution

Build a brand-appropriate, balanced assortment

Continually create newness to add freshness to the assortment

Suggest category extensions/web opportunities/growth initiatives to further category growth

Product Development

Lead the development and assortment of specific category(ies) and product lines to deliver merchandise with great value

Select and deliver the trendiest product while achieving financial goals and staying within company price points

Planning

Solid planning skills with experience managing financial metrics

Analyze the business and react with timely orders, reorders and cancellations

Constantly seek out new opportunities to be profitable and nimble

Market Skills and Awareness

Represent Five Below with integrity and authority

Build a relationship with the market that results in a differentiated product mix

Exhibit market awareness through knowledge of relevant trends, competitors and current reference points

Develop relationships with existing vendors and have the ability to seek out/onboard new vendors to capitalize on the hottest trends and deliver the most exciting new merchandise

Negotiate favorable costs, terms and conditions with all vendors

Communication and Leadership

Foster an environment of continual training and development; demonstrate ability to grow assistants and associate buyers for bench strength

Work with other members of the merchandising team on product development, implementation, delivery and store placement

Be a clear communicator with the ability to present and support a point of view

Be a team player with the ability to provide leadership, training and motivation to employees and peers

Ability to work cross-functionally with all pertinent partners

Be an active listener and open to constructive feedback
