Position Overview:

Solid Power is seeking a Sr. Scientist/Scientist III to join our talented team of engineers and scientists working to revolutionize the battery industry through the development of next-generation, all solid-state rechargeable batteries. Solid Power is a dynamic, fast-paced, collaborative and innovative team environment. The preferred candidate will have in-depth experience with sulfur or sulfide cathodes and be responsible for leading the development and mechanistic analysis of these cathodes within the R&D group. This scientist will work closely with electrolyte and anode R&D, technology integration, and the cell engineering teams to commercialize a high-energy solid-state battery.

Job Duties:

Contribute to the development and integration of advanced sulfur and metal sulfide-based cathodes into solid state cells.

Contribute to the optimization of synthesis conditions to obtain desired particle size, structure and morphology.

Perform materials characterization to understand the effect of synthesis conditions on material physical and chemical properties.

Perform electrode coating, cell assembly and electrochemical testing to evaluate the cathodes in solid state battery, and optimization of electrode formulation.

Lead post-mortem or in-situ investigation of cell components using multiple approaches and provide insight for further performance improvement.

Summarize experimental data and contribute to technical reports.

Work closely, collaboratively, and effectively with other departments and team members.

Adhere to all safety precautions and protocols.

Maintain thorough and accurate records of all conducted experimentation.

Document and follow standard operating procedures as well as assist in drafting or editing procedures during process development.

Qualifications/ Requirements:

Ph.D. degree in chemistry, material science, chemical engineering, or a related discipline with minimum 3 years of industry experience in the development of lithium-ion batteries.

Hands-on experience on sulfur or metal sulfide-based cathode material synthesis and Li-S battery development; solid-state battery development experience is highly preferred. Experience with sulfide electrolytes is a plus.

Experience with mechanistic study and failure analysis of lithium battery materials and cells; strong electrochemistry analysis skills and experience in employing multiple methods (crystallography, morphology, spectroscopy, etc.) in understanding failure and performance improvement approach.

Experience with analytical and characterization techniques such as X-ray diffraction, SEM, FTIR, EIS, DSC, etc. Experience with glovebox use, air-sensitive materials desirable.

Hands-on experience in electrode coating, cell fabrication and testing.

Structured problem-solving and analytical skills and strong technical skills in areas including electrochemistry and/or nanomaterial synthesis. Design of experiments experience desirable.

Excellent work ethic and ability to quickly demonstrate independence.

Ability to adapt to rapidly evolving research and development needs.

A highly analytical, detail-oriented mindset with an eye toward practical solutions.

Excellent communication and organizational skills.

The candidate must be responsible and self-motivated, with a history of stable employment and performance.

Physical Requirements:

Prolonged periods of sitting and standing.

Ability to wear respirator protection occasionally.

Fine motor skills.

Salary Range: $83,000 - $140,000 annually
