Course Title:Access to Justice Practicum (Level 1): Prison Law Clinic Part I

Section:C

Course Description:This course provides students with the unique opportunity to undertake hands-on work in prison law, including contributing to the provision of legal information and assistance to people who are incarcerated at the Ottawa-Carleton Detention Centre (OCDC).

This innovative course blends substantive learning in prison law with practical, hands-on experience providing legal information to the Ottawa community. Substantively, the course explores the concept of abolitionism and engages with abolitionist scholarship, advocacy and projects in Canada and around the world. The course also explores the legal rights of incarcerated people and the challenges of assisting them in claiming and defending their rights. Practically, students receive training on how to do client intake and provide legal and other forms of assistance, under the supervision of the instructing lawyers.

Student work is partially self-directed, and includes a mix of foundational lectures, student-led projects, and work in the community.
