Salary: $20/Hour

Market Assistant (Joyful Food Markets)

1-Year Grant-Funded

(Tuesday through Friday 12 p.m. - 5 p.m. 20-25 Hours/week)

Martha’s Table requires all team members and classroom volunteers to have completed a COVID-19 primary series and received one booster dose. Team members who are not yet eligible for a booster must submit proof of their booster vaccination within 2 months of receiving their final primary series dose or an original monovalent booster vaccine to .

Martha’s Table will consider waiving the vaccination requirement for:

Team members who object in good faith and in writing, pursuant to procedures established by the City Administrator or his or her designee, that the employee’s vaccination would violate their sincerely held religious beliefs; and

Team members who have obtained and submitted written certification from a physician or other licensed health professional who may order an immunization, that being vaccinated for COVID-19 is medically inadvisable because of the employee’s medical condition.

Team members who believe they qualify for either exemption must submit a request for a waiver along with appropriate documentation to support their request to .

POSITION OVERVIEW

Our Healthy Market Assistant position combines grocery retail logistics and food education, creating the ideal job for someone who is passionate about ensuring that communities have increased access to healthy food, education supports, and joy. Join Martha’s Table as we expand our Joyful Food Markets program that aims to increase access to healthy food while encouraging healthy eating behaviors among students in early childhood education, elementary, middle, and high school programs.

Our Healthy Market Assistant is responsible for providing operational and logistical support to our energetic (no-cost) market experience, which will include, but is not limited to: supporting food logistics and market setup and teardown, customer service, and assisting with on-site sampling and food demonstrations to educate audiences about healthy eating practices.. POSITION DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Provide on-site support to healthy market team members to set up, implement, and break down the pop-up market so it looks good, flows well, and successfully creates a positive shopping experience for all guests and participants

Support grocery assembly shifts alongside staff and volunteers

Drive sprinter van to school sites

Assist with on-site food education and demo activities with children and their adult caregivers and preparing related food and demo supplies for markets

Assist with sign-in registration and data entry at the market

Follow food safety, handling, and sanitation and food preparation guidelines.

Promote the market by distributing flyers, engaging with families, and sharing information and collateral with the school community

Attend at least 2 anchor events annually

Performs other duties as assigned

EXPERIENCE, KNOWLEDGE, AND SKILL REQUIREMENTS

Background check clearance required as part of working with DCPS and educational institutions

Possess a driver’s license with an acceptable driving record required

Food handlers certification preferred but not required

Ability to lift, bend, twist, carry produce items of up to 50 pounds

Strong preference for those who have worked in retail/grocery settings before

Independent decision-maker, self-directed, takes initiative

Detail oriented with strong organizational skills and planning ability

Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in diverse communities

Positive energy and attitude; a team player who is willing to do whatever it takes; openness to learning and growing

High level of flexibility, patience, and ability to solve problems quickly.

Must be comfortable working with Word and Excel, Google applications and Adobe Acrobat

Experience working with different groups, such as adults, children, in the school setting and in the nonprofit sector preferred

While not required, preference will be given to those either living in Wards 7 & 8 or those with experience working there.

Must be able to travel/commute to multiple school sites in Wards 7 and 8 each week. Markets are held Monday-Friday each week (October-May) (4-6 hour shifts) and also during the summer (25 markets total between June, July and August) throughout Wards 7 & 8.

Bilingual in English/Spanish, preferred but not required

EDUCATION AND TRAINING REQUIREMENTS

Minimum of a high school diploma or GED equivalent

The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
