The Department of Chemistry maintains a pool of undergraduate teaching assistants (UTA) who, commensurate with qualifications, may teach organic chemistry labs or perform technical lab upkeep, preparation, and technical support.
This position may involve teaching organic chemistry laboratory and/or restocking the labs at the end of week and/or setting up experiments at the beginning of the week.
Possible activities include, but are not limited to:
Teach organic chemistry laboratory including:
Presenting pre-lab lectures
Supervising laboratory experiments
Enforcing laboratory rules
Grading student laboratory assignments
Attending weekly TA meetings
Holding office hours
Clean glassware (distillation apparatus, flasks, etc.)
Conduct room checks between each lab period
Locate missing/misplaced equipment and return to the proper area(s)
Replace broken glassware
Replenish solutions/chemicals
Monitor chemical waste and dispose of waste as directed
Collect and submit items for lost-and-found
Maintain the supply of gloves, paper towels, weighing paper, filter paper, etc. in all labs
Pick up packages and orders at the Chemistry Department stockroom
Maintain chemical inventory
Gather needed supplies and materials for labs
Prepare necessary solutions
Gather and organize needed glassware and chemicals (e.g., ice, dry ice, liquid nitrogen, etc.)
Set up and break down lab experiments
Place stock room glassware, equipment, and chemicals into lab
Return stock room glassware, equipment, and chemicals as directed for next-use convenience
Check primary waste bottle and move contents to secondary container, if necessary. Notify Director as secondary containers fill.
Clean up chemical spills, fume hoods, balances, lab benches, etc.
Maintain the supply of gloves, paper towels, weighing paper, filter paper, etc. in all labs
Break down boxes and take to recycle
Check glass waste boxes and replace as necessary

Required Qualifications
During the semester term of the appointment, the student hourly must be enrolled in no fewer than 6 credit hours. For summer periods the student hourly must: 1) have been enrolled in no less than 6 hours in the past spring semester or 2) be pre-enrolled in upcoming fall semester in no less than 6 hours or 3) be enrolled in summer session or 4) be admitted to study in the upcoming fall semester. Student Hourlies may be undergraduate or graduate students. (Exceptions granted for GRA/GTA/GA appointments DO NOT apply to Student Hourly appointments).
Must have taken and passed CHEM 331.
Preferred Qualifications
Taken and passed CHEM 335 and CHEM 336.
