Description
Hofangahau College in the Kingdom of Tonga has requested the support of a Peace Corps Response Volunteer (PCRV) to serve as a Secondary-Level Science Teacher. In Tonga, English is an official language alongside Tongan, and according to policy is the language of instruction for all secondary schools, with student workbooks written in English for all subjects except for Tongan Language and Culture. English language attainment is generally lower on the “outer islands” like ‘Eua than the main island of Tonga and the science curriculum is delivered through the medium of English. The science lab at Hofangahau has only very basic equipment and is in need of significant renovation.
The PCRV will support Hofangahau to both develop teaching strategies in this resource limited environment and to help identify best value new equipment for science instruction. The PCRV will teach middle and high school age students, develop learning and teaching resources, and tutor and/or provide night classes to assist students. The PCRV will also assist with grant funding applications where needed.
Candidates selected for this position will be arriving in Tonga together as a group, so while the departure dates for the whole group could change, dates cannot be changed for individual candidates.
