Description
Hofangahau College in the Kingdom of Tonga has requested the support of a Peace Corps Response Volunteer (PCRV) to serve as a Secondary-Level English Teacher. In Tonga, English is an official language alongside Tongan, and according to policy is the language of instruction for all secondary schools, with student workbooks written in English for all subjects except for Tongan Language and Culture. English language attainment is generally lower on the “outer islands” like ‘Eua than the main island of Tonga and ongoing teacher shortages have left Hofangahau College without any full-time English teachers.
The PCRV will teach middle and high school age students, develop learning and teaching resources, and tutor and/or provide night classes to assist students. The PCRV will also assist with grant funding applications where needed. English is the most critical need but if interested, the PCRV could assist in teaching any of the subjects offered at Hofanagahau.
Candidates selected for this position will be arriving in Tonga together as a group, so while the departure dates for the whole group could change, dates cannot be changed for individual candidates.
