Reporting to the District Vice President, Manitoba, the HSE Manager will be responsible for leading the development and continuous improvement of the Buildings HSE Management program.

This position is based out of the Winnipeg, MB office and will require site visits for projects managed out of the Manitoba Buildings Group.

What You Will Be Working On

Support a culture that encompasses the highest ethical standards aligned with the organization.

Lead the development and continuous improvement of the Buildings HSE Management Program for the district.

Work with the Building’s Leadership Team and the Senior HSE Director to ensure the organization’s HSE Program is implemented consistently across Buildings Group.

Oversee and recommend continuous improvement as needed to the HSE Manual, Policies and Procedures.

Provide leadership, coaching and direction to HSE Coordinators to ensure the achievement of the HSE KPI’s as identified within the HSE Program.

Lead the development of all HSE personnel through on-going coaching and mentoring to ensure effective, safe project delivery and individual career development.

Work with Senior HSE Director to represent the organization when dealing with provincial and federal regulators.

Work collaboratively with stakeholders to ensure HSE standards are communicated, implemented and measured to foster a positive safety culture.

Report on HSE related statistical summaries, including leading / lagging indicators.

Audit the HSE Management System to ensure the overall integrity of the system is maintained.

Complete incident investigations in a timely manner, including reporting results and corrective actions to Senior Management and appropriate stakeholders.

Directly participate in all Serious Incident Investigations.

Ensure corrective actions identified within the HSE Management System are assigned, completed and closed out as appropriate.

Support the delivery of safety program training to employees and maintaining training records.

Support district leadership with proposals and/or inquiries as needed.

Ensure HSE Coordinators are actively promoting, engaging and facilitating the HSE program and objectives.

Support the site Leadership Team in addressing HSE related topics.

Participate in the recruitment of HSE positions.

Liaise with external stakeholders to build positive relationships and communicate Bird’s commitment to safety.

Assist in the administration, documentation and management of external certifications, such as COR.

Keep management current on the status of any HSE issue(s) that may impact work being performed.

Other duties as required.

What we are Looking For

Undergraduate Degree in Health, Safety and Environmental Management or from a related and equivalent field from a recognized institution.

National Construction Safety Officer

CRSP Certification an asset

10+ years’ Health and Safety field experience demonstrating progressively greater responsibility in a supervisory / leadership capacity with a minimum of four years of management level experience.

Comprehensive working knowledge of Provincial HSE Acts and Regulations and industry standards as they apply to the construction industry

Thorough knowledge and experience in health and safety management systems, risk assessment and program implementation

Skilled in managing internal auditing programs

Self-motivated, action oriented and ability to work collaboratively in a team environment or independently on routine tasks with a positive attitude

Experience leading, developing and mentoring HSE team

Experience in working in a unionized environment considered an asset

Highly developed interpersonal skills and strong customer service orientation

Sense of urgency and strong commitment to achieving goals

Ability to forge, grow and maintain positive relationships with multiple groups

Strong written and oral communication skills

Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and document management programs

Able to manage multiple priorities simultaneously and meet the time demands of unpredictable activities; capable of handling pressure and challenges in a dynamic business environment

Ability to work within tight deadlines and prioritization of work to achieve them

Strong organization, analytical, critical thinking, problem-solving skills, and a high degree of accuracy and attention to detail
