The City of Virginia Beach’s Internship Program is designed to provide students with an opportunity to apply and utilize acquired knowledge in field of study.

Eligibility: Must be a currently enrolled student (in an associate's, bachelor's, master's degree or PhD program) and be in good academic standing as determined by the school, college, or university.

Applications received will be considered for Summer and Fall internship opportunities that become available. We have a variety of departments that may offer internship opportunities in engineering, information technology, library, human resources, business, communications & media relations, as well as finance. Tasks may include working on projects, assisting with day-to-day operations, as well as attending meetings. Our interns often have the opportunity to go on site visits and meet with various stakeholders to learn how the City serves our citizens and tourists.

We are currently hiring interns for the following internship opportunities: Emergency Management and Budget & Policy. Additional details are outlined below.

Emergency Management Internship:

The City of Virginia Beach Emergency Management Office is seeking students interested in a Summer Emergency Management Internship to assist with emergency preparedness activities across both the Emergency Management and Security Divisions.

Required Education: Working towards a degree in Emergency Management, Homeland Security, Project Management, Marketing, Public Administration, or Public Policy majors preferred, but not required. For degree programs not listed, please provide a cover letter explaining why you are seeking an EM internship.

Required Attachments: Resume & Cover Letter

Duties include, but are not limited to;

Assisting with drafting or reviewing emergency plans

Participating in or leading community outreach events

Assisting with preparing for or presenting at briefings and meetings

Developing agendas or reports, assisting during emergency operations.

Expected Dates: July 11th 2024 - August 16th 2024

Budget & Policy Analyst Internship:

The City of Virginia Beach department of Budget & Management Services is responsible for the City’s budget which provides funding for major construction projects, including projects for building new facilities, improving our transit system, maintaining our roads and parks, purchasing major equipment, and more. Our Budget and Management Services department is in search of a detail-oriented student with exceptional analytical skills for their Budget & Policy Analyst Internship.

Required Education: Masters in Public Administration (Preferably graduating December 2024)

Duties:

Assisting in departmental budgets.

Reviewing and analyzing the fiscal impact of new and redevelopment

projects.

Research and evaluation of policies and alternatives.

Development and summarization of financial information for

communication with leadership and citizens.

Assisting in providing recommendations on revenue.
