The Root for Trees Program Coordinator plays a vital role in supporting the Root for Trees program. Root for Trees is the city of Edmonton’s volunteer tree planting initiative. We work with community groups, local businesses, school & youth groups, and corporations to plant native species of trees and shrubs in naturalized areas around Edmonton. This position would be involved in the hiring, training, and daily supervision of front-line staff. In addition, they will review and develop program manuals and proper safety procedures.

This position will also assist and provide support to the Root for Trees Program Lead, and support policy review and evaluation of program criteria. They will be involved in regular program development, expenditures, and several aspects of program promotions, outreach, and communications. This employee would be directly interacting with the public, and providing opportunities for citizens to take part in environmental stewardship and beautification initiatives to enhance Edmonton as a Green City.

Review and develop procedures and training manuals, facilitate hiring, training, supervising of staff, create staff schedules, approve vacation requests, review and approve staff time and evaluation of seasonal program staff

Role model a commitment to an inclusive and diverse approach to staff and volunteers

Work closely with communications to create, prepare and distribute promotional materials (i.e. posters, pamphlets, and engagement incentives) that support inclusive practices

Research and develop content for educational programs

Develop and maintain social media updates and information for events

Advertise to recruit volunteers for our programs and special events; through on-line calendars, newsletters and through establishing communications connections to community groups and external interest groups ensuring all know they are welcome

Monitor and coach staff to maintain high-quality program content, create new program content, establish effective evaluations

Order, purchase, maintain and/or deliver program event supplies and equipment as well as record and track volunteer & overall program statistics

Plan annual event schedules, event and program planning for Root for Trees

Special Event Coordination

Direct communication with volunteers to maintain service level demands

Manage Volunteer bookings and the Root for Trees business account

Schedule and coordinate of daily programs, truck coordination, and maintain our Volunteer database

Support the Root for Trees Program Lead

Perform other related duties as required

Degree or diploma in Environmental Sciences/Forestry/Agriculture/Horticulture/Botany/Biological Sciences/Recreation/Education or a related field. Equivalencies in education/experience may be considered

Minimum of 1 year experience in Program Development and Delivery

Minimum of 1 year experience directly supervising staff

Knowledge of use of Social Media will be considered an asset

Plant identification skills, experience in horticulture/plant care, and/or knowledge of local flora and fauna are considered assets

Strong written, oral, presentation and web-based communication skills

Experience using computer software such as Google Applications, Adobe Acrobat and volunteer database management programs or platforms

Ability to work in a team environment, providing support to team members on projects outside your immediate scope of work

Strong time management, organization and customer service skills

Physically fit and willing to work outside in all weather conditions and on rugged terrain

Ability to lift up to 50 lbs

Experience driving a truck and trailer is an asset

Standard First Aid and Level C CPR certification is required

Hire is dependent on Police Information Check satisfactory to the City of Edmonton, and there may be a cost associated with this requirement

Valid Alberta Class 5 driver's license (or provincial equivalent). Obtaining and maintaining a City Driver's permit is a requirement of this position. This will require business automotive insurance coverage

The successful candidate must arrange their own transportation to the work location. Personal transportation for operational requirements to be reimbursed in accordance with City of Edmonton policy. This will require business automotive insurance coverage

Up to 1 temporary full-time position up to 11 months

Hours of Work: 40 hours per week. Shifts are variable throughout the week, including regular weekend, afternoon and evening work depending on operational requirements.

Salary: $26.580 - $33.357 (Hourly); $55,499.040 - $69,649.420 (Annually)
