What You Will Do:

We are currently searching for a Lab Manager. This position is to support the daily activities in the lab including animal colony management, surgical preparation, imaging microscopy, image acquisition, data analysis and lab inventory and safety management. This is a full-time on-site opportunity located in Bethesda, MD.

Maintain laboratory records, reports, and files.

Develop manage a laboratory information management and system.

Maintain complete, detailed records of all experiments performed.

Update and maintain unified records of all protocols; make them available to lab staff and other scientists.

Develop protocols for lab equipment and new techniques.

Collect, organize, and record experimental data in a form suitable for publication.

Recreate each experiment describing protocols, methods and procedures used; include summaries of data obtained and descriptions of any problems or unusual situations encountered in carrying out the experiment.

Provide daily oversight and management of laboratory operations to ensure continuity of experiments and data analyses.

Coordinate the relocation of scientific equipment, office supplies, workstations, research supplies and personnel to ensure minimal interruption of workflow.

Maintain lab records (including ordering, equipment records and data archiving).

Procure laboratory supplies, reagents and equipment when needed; collect and organize billing paperwork.

Maintain the equipment through troubleshooting and performing or coordinating maintenance, service, and repair tasks as necessary.

Manage and resolve lab administrative and technical problems.

Evaluate and arrange for efficient space utilization of the laboratory.

Develop standards, timelines, SOPs, and delegations of authority for use within the laboratory.

Identify management and operational initiatives to support all aspects of the laboratory.

Coordinate laboratory space management, labeling and maintenance of common lab areas.

Organize and keep detailed records of ordered supplies and delivery slips.

Investigate cost-effective mechanisms for the procurement and maintenance of specialized lab services.

Manage laboratory acquisitions and maintenance contracts.

Propose funding estimates for new lab initiatives and on-going project activities.

Develop protocols for laboratory equipment and new techniques.

Identify relevant concerns, research applicable regulations and policies, compile and analyze material from many disparate and difficult to access sources.

Assist Principal Investigator in recruiting and onboarding new staff in the lab.

Coordinate work and staff to ensure all need, expectations and timelines are met.

Create user-friendly quick guides for each equipment, train new users.

Ensure that all staff have required training and certification needed for human and/or animal research.

Provide guidance and assistance to other members of the laboratory using basic techniques.

Mentor Post-Bacs to successfully understand and execute experiments to add valuable contributions to projects.

Manage completed training data for new staff.

Generate, process, and analyze datasets to be included in scientific reports.

Assemble data in both tabular (i.e., tables, graphs, charts) and narrative form; note any inconsistencies or areas where the data appear inconclusive.

Carry out routine analyses of data; apply standard statistical methods as needed.

Update and maintain laboratory notebooks and databases; gather, analyze, and interpret data; prepare summaries and reports.

Perform laboratory procedures (i.e., gel electrophoresis, enzymatic assays, culturing of eukaryotic and bacterial cells, protein purification, light microscopy, etc.).

Perform biological sample preparation techniques (fixation, embedding, sectioning, staining, dehydration, drying, coating, etc.).

Establish, execute, review, and evaluate laboratory procedures and policies and procedures for operating functions of laboratory.

Purchase supplies using POTS, stock supplies; make solutions; dispose of chemical waste; etc.

Analyze and suggest selected purchase equipment and monitor maintenance and service agreement.

Inventory and procure new equipment and computer hardware/software programs and licenses.

Develop and prescribe technical specifications for laboratory equipment or other products or services; determine and contact potential procurement sources; negotiate or confirm costs and availability.

Work with section head to investigate, review and recommend the purchase of new equipment, schedule demonstrations, initiate purchase.

Coordinate laboratory purchase of inventory, storage, and supplies usage.

Maintain a safe operating environment in the lab.

Prepare laboratory for upcoming inspections; certify lab preparedness for Site Monitoring Visits and maintain clinical laboratory records received in the lab.

What You Will Need:

Bachelor’s degree in Neuroscience, Pharmacology, Physiology, or science related discipline.

A minimum of Four (4) years of experience in good Lab Management Practices or general laboratory setting.

Master’s Degree in a science related discipline preferred.
