The Communications Coordinator works under the direction of the Program Manager to support and further the mission of the James Madison Program (JMP) through various media. The JMP hosts numerous events, conferences, and programs throughout the academic year necessitating development and distribution of promotional materials, events recordings, and communication to the JMP community of speakers, panelists, participants, and attendees. The Communications Coordinator will assist in all of these areas and also lead the effort to continue production of the JMP Podcast.

Responsibilities

Implement JMP Communications and Marketing Strategy

Develop, oversee, and direct JMP podcasts including selecting and inviting guests, preparing for and hosting the interviews, and editing and promoting the episodes

Translate the complex & interdisciplinary methods, projects, programs, & events of the JMP into promotional & publicity content that is both engaging to research scholars while also understandable to non-specialist audiences

Write high-quality content tailored to the JMP's channels & audiencesRefresh & maintain the JMP website and other electronic platforms - including all prominent social media platforms

Implement communications strategies to inform, educate, and connect with the JMP community

Coordinate social media with campus colleagues, including cultivating strong relationships with University Communications social media team

Correspond with press, as necessary (press releases, press follow-ups)

JMP Team Support

Identify opportunities to increase visibility of JMP initiatives

Provide assistance with events and conferences, specifically covering and reporting for purposes of sharing and promoting over social media platforms

Provide input and support of the JMP planning and logistics for each academic year

Qualifications

Essential Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree or equivalent

Ability to conceptualize, write, and edit strategic, accurate, and concise content for University audiences

Expertise in the complete podcast production process

Excellent research skills for developing broadcast appropriate content

Experience in conducting interviews for public broadcast

Knowledge of writing styles and guidelines for various media formats and ability to create, coordinate, and edit copy for each format: (print, digital/social media, video, broadcast, etc.)

Experice with administering digital and social media platforms

Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Acrobat, and MacOS

Thorough knowledge of the publication production process and proven success in managing projects

Preferred Qualifications:

A bachelor's degree in communications or related field. (Degree may be waived if equivalent, extensive, and related experience can be demonstrated)

Graphic design experience and/or familiarity with InDesign/Illustrator

Two - three years of digital production experience; demonstrated competency and creativity required

Experience with Drupal web platform

Experience working with MailChimp and Listserv

Journalism and/or professional writing and editing experience a plus

Certification in project management a plus
