Overview for Summer Advisors

Our TRIO Upward Bound and Upward Bound Math and Science Programs are seeking Summer Advisors to join their team. The Summer Advisor is a six (6) week position during our Summer Component program that runs from June 10 - July 19. The Summer Advisor will work from 8am - 4:30pm until July 7th, then you will live in a residence hall from July 7 - July 19 and supervise approximately 30 - 50 high school students who are participating in this program. The Summer Advisor schedule will be up to 40 hours per week. The Summer Advisor will also be required to attend summer trips and all activities. The compensation is $13.00 per hour and up to 3 meals a day.

Duties and Responsibilities

Summer Advisors are required to live in a designated residence hall with the Upward Bound Students on campus during the Upward Bound component of summer. Must maintain 24-hour residency 6 days a week (Sunday-Friday) during the 2 weeks residential component. Advisors will be assigned a group of students, and will be responsible for supervising every student in a group living environment to ensure their safety and well-being 24 hours a day. Oversee the physical maintenance of the residence hall as it pertains to TRIO Upward Bound students; this involves establishing procedures for key assignment and collection of keys, prevention of abuse of room furniture, lounges and rooms. Assess any residence hall problems, and make decisions in compliance with program guidelines. Perform daily room checks to ensure the safety of students. Check the condition of rooms before and after TRIO Upward Bound students’ occupancy.

Must be able to tutor, counsel, teach, supervise and be a positive role model and provide support to students in personal, social and academic areas.

Assist the program in planning, organizing and implementing academic, recreational, social, and cultural activities; maintain discipline and harmonious relationships in the residence hall, classrooms and other areas of the program.

Serve as a liaison for the TRIO Upward Bound administrative and academic staff by creating the proper environment for both students and staff.

Assist the Upward Bound Team with any health and/or medical emergencies for students.

Participate in all scheduled academic and recreational activities, field trips.

Create and conduct required workshops and programs for students during some evenings.

Make sure students are up in the morning and prepared for class.

Attend Mandatory staff training and meetings. Complete minor safety training, FEPRA certification and Title X certification.

Education

Must have completed at least 1 year at a post-secondary educational institution (2-year or 4-year) but no more than a recent undergraduate degree graduate.

2 years post-secondary education preferred.

Experience

Must have lived in Residence Housing (College Dorm) and have familiarity with college residence hall policies and procedures.

Experience working with high school students, tutoring and/or assisting students

Experience with, or knowledge of, Federal TRIO Programs (e.g. Upward Bound, Talent Search, Student Support Services)

Core Competencies

Excellent verbal, written, conflict resolution, problem solving and organizational skills

Must have an understanding of first generation students needs

Must possess a high level of maturity, self-disciplined and able to work as part of a team

Additional Information

This position at Purdue University Northwest TRIO Upward Bound and Upward Bound Math/Science Program is a summer only position.
