The Ohio Department of Health supports a hybrid teleworking model. This position may work a hybrid schedule at the discretion of the manager or supervisor, which will require occasional attendance in the office for training, meetings and other operational needs. Employees must reside within a reasonable distance to their assigned headquarters for compliance with workplace reporting requirements.

Unless required by legislation, the selected candidate will begin at Pay Grade 12, Step 1 of the 1199 Pay Range Schedule ($28.92 per hour), with an opportunity for pay increase after six months ($30.39) of satisfactory performance and then a yearly raise thereafter.

What You'll Do: The Bureau of Health Improvement and Wellness (BHIW) is comprised of programs which address prevention and improved health outcomes for Ohioans across the lifespan. The Ohio Violence and Injury Prevention Section (OVIPS) is seeking one (1) candidate to fill our vacant Public Health Consultant role.

Acts as program consultant for statewide Ohio Violence and Injury Prevention Section (OVIPS).

Coordinates and evaluates programs, policies and procedures related to community harm reduction programs, including promoting and implementing evidence-based strategies to reduce harms and infectious diseases related to illicit drug use.

Serves as technical resource for community harm reduction programs to share best practices and promote comprehensive services.

Plans and develops monthly information sharing calls, webinars, organizes meetings, identifies and coordinates involvement of state and community partner groups.

Develops public relations campaigns on behalf of the OVIPS to promote priority injury issues.

Furnishes information and explains programs to the public, legislators and news media.

Makes speeches and presentations and maintains injury-related web pages.

Aids supervisor in responding to requests from professionals, media, government officials, and the public.

Assists supervisor in planning and coordinating of annual statewide Injury Symposium.

Coordinates planning groups to identify audience for the symposium and facilitates symposium arrangements.

Develops and coordinates health information, health education and health promotion activities designed to reduce health risk and promote healthy lifestyles.

Assesses training needs of subgrantees and develops and delivers training.

Prepares grant applications.

Contributes to writing and development of related policies and strategic plans.

Develops processes to track program initiatives, projects and grants/contracts.

Identifies emerging issues related to harm reduction topics by compiling information from literature searches, networking and participating in workshops and conferences related to “best practices” in injury prevention, education and program resources, materials, and potential partners.

6 mos. exp. in providing direct service &/or consultation in a public health, community health, hospital &/or clinic setting, to include exp. in program evaluation, grant review, developing & presenting training programs & in facilitating &/or working collaboratively with coalitions or groups;

Completion of graduate core coursework in public health, health care, health administration or related field; must be able to provide own transportation.

18 mos. exp. in providing direct service &/or consultation in a public health, community health, hospital &/or clinic setting, to include exp. in program evaluation, grant review, developing & presenting training programs & in facilitating &/or working collaboratively with coalitions or groups;

Completion of undergraduate core coursework in public health, health care, health administration or related field; must be able to provide own transportation.

Equivalent of Minimum Class Qualifications for Employment noted above.

Applications of those who meet the minimum qualifications will be further evaluated against the following criteria:

Experience in naloxone distribution or the implementation/operation of naloxone distribution programs

Experience working with risk factors of harm reduction and the prevention of drug overdose.

Experience with creating data reports and building instruments in REDCap.

Proficiency in computer software (e.g. Outlook, Excel, Word, MS Teams, Zoom).

Experience in monitoring/administering grants or contracts, including budget tracking.

Bachelors or advanced degree in public health, health care, health administration or related field.

Experience facilitating or coordinating meetings, and presenting information/public speaking.

Experience facilitating a committee or coalition.

Experience providing technical assistance or consultation related to public health efforts (e.g. injury prevention, infectious disease).
