Position Focus:

The Yale Center for Research Computing (YCRC) advances research at Yale by administering a state-of-the-art cyber-infrastructure, providing sustainable research services, and facilitating an interdisciplinary approach to the development and application of advanced computing and data processing technology throughout the research community. Wright Lab is advancing the frontiers of fundamental physics through a broad research program in nuclear, particle, and astrophysics that includes precision studies of neutrinos; searches for dark matter; investigations of the building blocks and interactions of matter; exploration of quantum science and its applications for fundamental physics experiments; and observations of the early Universe. Together, YCRC and Wright Lab support state-of-the-art research facilities, technical infrastructure, and interaction spaces for innovative instrumentation development, hands-on research, and training the next generation of scientists.

This role will provide advanced technical support for faculty and researchers at the Wright Lab, Linux support and other scientific computing support, on-site administration and support for domain specific applications and computational hardware and software used in research. This may include relational databases, scientific software such as SAS, Matlab, and R, and scripting languages such as Python and PERL, hardware including desktops, laptops, servers, storage arrays in laboratory and workgroup environments. This role requires a thorough understanding of the IT needs of the Wright Lab research community and the ability to anticipate and plan for change. Flexible working hours may be required to support the needs of the community.

The following Essential Duties are generic in nature; the information contained in this Position Focus is most relevant to this position.

Essential Duties

1. Provides technical expertise in resolving user system deficiencies and determines appropriate action. 2. Provides system services and analyze system performance for stakeholders and intended end users. Performs all activities necessary to activate a new operating system or new release of an existing system, including analysis, design, implementation, and related documentation. Analyzes systems performance and modifies programs to increase the efficiency of the operation. Reinstates integrity of system as quickly as possible following an outage in order to minimize item and data loss. 3. Recommends and authorizes system upgrades and software installations. 4. Designs, develops and implements new system tools. 5. Analyzes execution time of commonly used instruction to identify and replaces those that are inefficient or slow to operation. 6. Analyzes, evaluates and takes steps to circumvent problems and restores systems to operating condition. 7. Contributes in the determination of specifications and determines the combination of options needed to tailor an operating system to meet the business needs. 8. Conducts training and user education. 9. Researches new technologies, processes, and methodologies. 10. May perform other duties as assigned.

Required Education and Experience

Bachelor's Degree in a related field and a minimum of two years of related work experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Required Skill/Ability 1:

Expert working knowledge of RedHat Linux, and at least one scripting language (e.g., Python, Perl, bash).

Required Skill/Ability 2:

Ability to support staff, faculty and students working in a scientific and computationally intensive environment.

Required Skill/Ability 3:

Excellent technical writing with the ability to provide application-specific documentation tailored to individual users

Required Skill/Ability 4:

Ability to initiate and complete technical projects with minimal supervision. Attention to detail is necessary, as is maintaining a commitment to quality of service and user support.

Preferred Education, Experience and Skills:

Advanced degree in math or science, physics preferred. Experience in an academic/research institution. Advanced Linux/Unix OS systems administration experience. Any of the following is a plus: HPC, grid, or cloud computing; Configuration management and automated server deployment; Linux containers; Large-scale storage or distributed file systems; Managing hardware in data center/server rooms
