Overview:

The Machine Shop Head of Department (HOD) plays a crucial role in overseeing the manufacturing operations within the machine shop. They are responsible for leading and managing all aspects of the machine shop, ensuring efficiency, quality, and safety in production processes. The HOD collaborates with cross-functional teams to meet production targets, maintain equipment, and uphold industry standards.

Key Responsibilities:

Lead and supervise machine shop staff

Develop and implement manufacturing processes and best practices

Oversee production schedules and resource allocation

Ensure compliance with safety regulations and quality standards

Optimize production efficiency and minimize downtime

Manage inventory and procurement of raw materials and tools

Collaborate with engineering and design teams for product development

Resolve production issues and implement corrective actions

Conduct regular performance evaluations and provide feedback to staff

Implement Lean Manufacturing principles to enhance productivity

Monitor and control production costs to meet budget requirements

Maintain equipment and machinery to ensure optimal performance

Drive continuous improvement initiatives within the machine shop

Participate in strategic planning and goal setting for the department

Report on key performance indicators and production metrics

Required Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing, or related field

Proven experience in a senior leadership role within a machine shop environment

Demonstrated knowledge of CNC machining, tooling, and fabrication processes

Strong understanding of quality control and inspection techniques

Familiarity with Lean Manufacturing methodologies and continuous improvement tools

Proficiency in production planning and resource management

Excellent problem-solving and decision-making skills

Effective communication and interpersonal abilities

Ability to lead and motivate a diverse team of machinists and technicians

Sound knowledge of occupational health and safety regulations

Experience in implementing and optimizing manufacturing processes

Proficient in using CAD/CAM software and other manufacturing technology

Certification in Six Sigma or similar quality management programs

Proven track record of driving operational excellence and cost savings

Ability to work in a fast-paced, dynamic manufacturing environment
