The automotive coatings division is one of BASF’s most dynamic and fast-growing businesses in the region. We are seeking a professional like you to join our team to support the introduction of new resins and polymers into production, as well as provide technical expertise to solve production issues with established polymers and champion the localization of global technologies by close collaboration with global resin groups. In this role, you will also proactively identify business opportunities, as well as plan and execute laboratory research for the development of polymers for automotive coatings. This role is on site Monday-Friday in our Southfield, MI Coatings headquarters.

As a Scientist III - Polymers, You Create Chemistry By...

Synthesizing and developing resins to support development projects, as well as perform advanced analysis of polymers and run proof of concept experiments.

Executing global projects in the field of polymers and coatings, as well as preparing and monitoring Intellectual Property, you will collaborate closely with Global and Local Product Development and Color functions, exBU’s and functions, and translate creative technical approaches into generation of commercial resins

Representing the North America Resin group on a Global Platform and actively participating in internal and external meetings, as well as dissipate updates and findings through Presentations.

Contributing as a raw material expert and qualifying alternate sources based on comprehensive analysis and resin synthesis.

Collaborating with Global Resins group, leading the localization of global resin technologies.

Trouble-shooting manufacturing issues, and replicating manufacturing scenarios by performing lab synthesis.

Participating in the introduction of new resins into production.

If you...

Bachelor’s Degree in a science major with 10 years of experience in resin synthesis or Masters with 5 years’ experience or Ph.D. in Chemistry, Material/ Polymer Science, Chemical Engineering with a background in polymer synthesis

Experience with structure-property relationships of polymers

Analytical instrumentation experience in GPC, Gas Chromatography and Spectroscopy – IR and NMR

Hands on skills in polymer and organic synthesis

Exceptional verbal and written communication skills. This role will be communicating with our global counterparts.

Experience working in a dynamic environment with ability to manage changing priorities.
