Job Description

As a member of the health care team, is responsible for performing routine technical nursing duties and assists with other related duties involved in providing patient care in an ambulatory health program. Duties may include explaining programs offered by the agency to individuals. The activities of vocational nurse are based on the individual's educational preparation and experience. Work is performed under the administrative supervision of the Nursing Director and the clinical supervision of a registered nurse. Operates within the scope of the Nursing Practice Act and maintains standards consistent with the level of care set by Title 22.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Interviews patients to obtain appropriate health concern and/or immunization status.

Performs screening tests for which the individual has been prepared by education and experience.

Maintains records and documents all necessary information in the chart.

Takes vital signs and measurements (i.e. height/length and weight).

Assembles materials and equipment in preparation for patient care and maintains adequate supplies.

Assists providers with procedures approved to perform as requested.

Maintains adequate supplies and materials for each exam room and assists in the inventory and requisitioning of needed supplies.

Cleans and maintains clinic equipment and disposes of used supplies correctly.

Administers specified medication, orally or by subcutaneous or inter-muscular injection and notes time and amount on patients; charts as are permitted under the Vocational Nursing regulations and organizational standardized written procedures.

Collects samples, such as urine, blood and sputum from patients for testing and performs routine laboratory tests on samples.

Sterilizes equipment and supplies, using germicides or sterilizer.

Assist providers with follow-up of all abnormal test results and other treatment plans as needed.

Observes blood-borne pathogen precautions and infection control procedures per OSHA standards and clinic policies and procedures.

Assist other staff members in development and maintenance of department goals, objectives, policies and procedures.

Attend all meetings, conferences and trainings as required.

Participate in continuing education in order to provide the highest quality of care to the patient population and to maintain a current and active license to practice.

Participate in ongoing quality improvement monitoring and activities.

Acts as supervisor to nursing staff in the absence of RN coordinator and Nursing Director.

Attend to such duties and projects that may be assigned by department supervisors.

Implement appropriate patient teaching that is directed toward preventing illness and maintaining health in cooperation with and as directed by providers and/or registered nurse.

Contributes to the attainment of the goals of the unit by using contacts with individuals and community relationships to contribute to better public understanding of health services.

Identify victims of child and adult abuse, assault and domestic violence and provide intervention, make referrals as necessary and report to appropriate agency.

Graduate of an accredited Vocational Nurse training program.

Valid California LVN license.

Two (2) years experience as a LVN in a doctor's office or ambulatory medical clinic.

Current certificate as a phlebotomist or verification of appropriate training.

Current BLS CPR certification or able to obtain one.

Reliable transportation.
