Summary – The Part-Time Maintenance Gardener, under the general direction of the Operations Supervisor (Gardens Focus), is responsible for performing garden and landscape duties at Fellows Riverside Gardens. It is the responsibility of the Part-Time Maintenance Gardener to complete all assigned duties, tasks, instructions and/or work orders in a safe, efficient and timely manner. This position is suitable for transitional duty.
Primary Responsibilities Function Priority Percentage (Should = 100%)
General Maintenance and Repair 80%
Perform general lawn and landscape maintenance and upkeep (weeding, edging, mowing, fertilizing, deadheading, mulching and leaf removal) including the design installation of seasonal bulb and annual displays
Plant, water, fertilize, prune and care for trees, shrubs, perennials, annuals, bulbs and interior tropical plants
Assist with minor maintenance repairs and construction work
Perform tree, brush and invasive plant removal
Assist with plant propagation and crop production in greenhouses
Assist as needed with janitorial tasks including restroom cleaning and litter pick-up
Perform road, parking lot and walkway maintenance including snow and ice removal
Apply pesticides as requested
Assist with basic repair work as requested
Assist with special events
Assist with traffic control and job site cleanups
Perform routine inspections on garden walkways, displays and open spaces to ensure cleanliness and upkeep
Assist with forestry work to include tree removal/clean up and storm damage clean up
Equipment Operation 10%
Operate project specific vehicles and equipment including but not limited to: park vehicles such as non-CDL trucks, utility vehicles, snowplows, lawn mowers and other large equipment; power tools and hand tools
Properly use, clean, maintain and inspect equipment
Perform minor equipment maintenance as needed
Departmental Functions 10%
Provides intra-department support
Keep supervisors informed of essential issues and report disturbance to proper authorities
Communicate effectively and professionally with coworkers, visitors, renters and vendors
Provide general oversight of seasonal employees
Other duties as assigned

Regular and predictable attendance
Must be able to maintain a continuous positive attitude and professional appearance
Knowledge of current industry standard practices, trends, techniques, laws, regulations and best practices within the field of horticulture
Basic mechanical aptitude including the ability to operate tools and equipment
Ability to work with the public and other staff members in a friendly, professional manner and maintain a courteous demeanor
Ability to complete all tasks assigned in an efficient, timely and professional manner
Education/Qualifications
Must be at least 18 years old
Must possess a high school diploma or equivalent
Must possess and retain a valid Driver’s License
A minimum of one (1) year of experience in general landscaping or horticulture required
Physical Requirements Necessary to Perform Job Functions
Must be physically able to perform all tasks inherent to the position
Ability to see, hear and effectively communicate with others
Ability to read and interpret plans, details, specifications and operating manuals
Ability to walk, traverse or otherwise access trails of all types, natural terrain, construction sites and all properties under control of Mill Creek MetroParks under all types of conditions
Must be accessible and available on short notice for emergency call-outs
Ability to perform physical labor in indoor and outdoor environments in cold and heat
Ability to work from different degrees of height by using stairs, ladders, scaffolding, etc.
Ability to lift over 50 pounds
Ability to stand, sit, bend, stoop and walk for lengthy periods of time and walk up/down stairs, ladders, etc.
Hand dexterity; ability to pull, push, reach and grab freely
Job Requirement
The Part-Time Maintenance Gardener is required to be available as the situation warrants. Events may require working evenings, weekends, holidays or other times outside of what is considered a normal schedule.
