Pipe Fitter

PRINCIPAL DUTIES:

Lays out, cuts, bends, assembles, and installs pipe, fittings and fixtures to construct and maintain piping systems, such as hot water heating, hydraulic, high pressure air and oil line systems as well as fresh water, hot water, sanitary drain, sewer pipe, bilge, fire lines, fuel, and exhaust systems.

Locates leaks and obstructions and repairs or clears them.

Performs piping tests on systems.

Performs preventive maintenance and emergency repairs to utility piping system, water distribution systems.

Performs installation for various piping systems using blueprints, and work orders.

Installs, maintains and repairs plumbing fixtures, equipment and piping.

Installs, maintains and repairs a variety of piping connections.

Use oxy-acetylene cutting/heating torch in dismantling piping systems and annealing copper tubing for heat exchange.

Incumbent is responsible for the installation, maintenance, and repair of high-temperature water and high-pressure piping systems such as hydraulic, and air system.

Overhaul or replace various size and type of shipboard valves.

Repairs piping systems through replacement of defective pipes or joints through soldering, brazing, sweating, or welding.

Performs related duties as required.

Conduct strength and tightness tests on all shipboard piping systems such as high pressure air, salt water, and hydraulic systems and investigate/resolve test failures.

Ability to read and interpret blueprints, instructions, specifications and other related materials.

Working knowledge of the methods of installation and repair of piping systems.

Working knowledge of the methods of overhaul and repair of valves.

Working knowledge of safety precautions in the pipefitting trade.

Ability to use tools and equipment necessary to affect repairs.

Ability to read blueprints and mechanical drawings.

Shall be able to weld small pipes and qualified for arc welding of small diameter steel piping.

Working knowledge of the characteristics of pipes constructed of a variety of materials.

Completion of trade school and five (5) years of shipyard experience in the installation and repair of a variety of piping systems.
