Job Description:

Summary:

The Audio-Visual Technician provides front-line technology support and services on-site or via phone or email for classes and events. This includes on-site troubleshooting, maintenance and repair of multimedia audiovisual equipment and systems in technology-enhanced classrooms and event spaces. This position also provides video streaming, webinars, videoconferencing, and lecture capture support for classes and events, including Zoom Rooms and other Hy-Flex systems and coordinates digital video and audio activities, including monitoring incoming and outgoing picture and sound feeds for streams. The incumbent trains faculty, staff, and students in the use of classroom technologies, assists senior AV staff in maintaining and troubleshooting audio video equipment and systems, and provides technical support training in the use and maintenance of new equipment and technologies.

This position is intended for a late afternoon / evening shift.

Essential Functions:

1. Classroom technology support:

Deliver maintain and operate multimedia audiovisual equipment and systems used to support a wide variety of instructional methods and techniques in classrooms both in technology enhanced classrooms and in classrooms without or with limited installed technology. Troubleshoot and resolve technical problems with AV equipment used in classrooms. This includes, but is not limited to, projectors, LCD and plasma displays, control systems, media playback equipment, AV interface plates, projection screens, audio equipment (amps, microphones, speakers) and video cameras. Deliver supplemental equipment for classes and assure that the equipment is set up properly.

Report all unresolved classroom problems to senior technicians and AV management team via the AV database, Teams, and email.

Provide input for the creation of departmental operating guidelines, procedures, and documentation related to classroom support operations as well as system and equipment improvements.

2. Live event support:

Setup, test, operate, and calibrate audiovisual equipment, such as microphones, speakers, sound mixing boards, video and audio monitors, and projectors, for live and hybrid events and recordings. Serve as primary technical support for most early morning general and special events. Provide solutions for presentation needs frequently in high-pressure situations. Deliver supplemental equipment and ensure that the equipment is set up properly.

3. Equipment maintenance and repair:

Participate in an ongoing program of maintenance and replacement for AV equipment. Conduct bi-annual room equipment checks as directed and perform necessary repairs. Provide on-site troubleshooting, maintenance, and repair of audio-visual equipment and systems such as projectors, switchers, DSP, button control panels, mixers, amplifiers, media players, doc cams, and other associated equipment. Reprogram control systems as needed. Carry out first line fault repairs and communicate with vendors when repairs cannot be resolved locally. Help with in-shop troubleshooting, preventative maintenance, and testing.

4. Support Hybrid, Hy-Flex and Zoom Room systems for classes and events:

Assist in operation of Hybrid, Hy-Flex and Zoom Room systems. Setup and operate cameras and audio devices for hybrid classes and events in spaces without built-in or malfunctioning streaming systems. Monitor streams to ensure quality and address any possible problems. Advise customers on appropriate formats, equipment or services for their event or class. Direct and coordinate activities of part time AV Technicians and other personnel in relation to a variety of streaming situations.

5. Training on Instructional Technology:

Consult with stakeholders on their event and classroom support needs. Train faculty, staff, and students in the use of classroom technologies. Provide technical support for training of audio and video technicians in the use and maintenance of new equipment and technologies. Train part-time staff as assigned.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work:

Front-line, 35 hour work week.

This is a union eligible position.

Salary Range:

$23.11 - $25.91/hour.

Required Education and Experience:

Associate's degree or equivalent

At least two years of college as well as a combination of in-depth training and experience in audio visual systems and equipment troubleshooting, maintenance and repair. Previous experience in AV classroom or event support in high pressure situations. Have or be able to obtain within a period of one year from starting date the following certifications: Extron’s AVA, ECS.

1-3 years of relevant experience

Previous experience in AV classroom and/or event support in high pressure situations.

Preferred Education and Experience:

Bachelor's degree or equivalent

Audio Technology, Audio Engineering, or a closely related technology field or equivalent in education and experience. Have or be able to obtain with a period of one year from starting date the following certifications: Extron’s AVA, ECS, and EDSP. Special consideration will be given to those candidates possessing higher certifications than those listed here.

3-5 years of relevant experience

At least 3 years’ experience in: live sound reinforcement, audio production, editing and recording, audiovisual support in an educational environment, electronics and AV systems maintenance, repair, and programming. Experience with hybrid or Hy-flex systems and usage.
