An opportunity to work on the South Side of Houston near the Texas Gulf Coast Region!

MID LEVEL PIPING DESIGNER EXPECTATIONS (DESIGNER III - IV)

SUMMARY:

Mid-Level Piping Designers will be expected to perform layout, design, and drafting related work, both 2D and 3D, with a small amount of guidance from Sr. Designers and Project Engineers. They will also help train and provide guidance to Jr. Designers and Drafters.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

Perform project related duties as assigned by the Piping Supervisor or Sr. Designers.

Assist in developing engineering manhour estimates and proposals.

Assist project teams with scope development.

Assist in P&ID development.

Assist with project schedule development (provide information to the project scheduler and participate in schedule development meetings).

Assist with tracking project budget and status (piping scope)

Develop conceptual layouts and material take-offs for TIC estimates.

Perform piping design and equipment layout duties through all phases of the projects utilizing 2D and 3D CAD.

3D modeling of existing objects per field work and laser scans

Develop plans, sections, and details to accurately convey construction or fabrication requirements.

Extract and finalize piping isometrics from 3D models.

Prepare Composite Bill of Materials.

Incorporate vendor supplied drawings or information into project drawings.

Review vendor supplied drawings and provide approval comments.

Draw hydraulic isos and stress isos.

Communicate and interface effectively with other engineering disciplines.

Prepare Navis files for CAD model reviews.

Participate in project meetings.

Must be able to travel to field project locations to take dimensions, make field sketches, walk down systems, etc.

Take accurate field work using mechanical measurement tools and make clear field notes.

Write concise Job Notes/Letters of Instruction/Scope of work documents in narrative form.

Assemble design packages for Review, Bids, Approval, Construction, etc…

Train Jr Designers and Drafters in piping design.

Resolve RFI’s and construction questions.

Continually increase piping design knowledge.

REQUIREMENTS:

EDUCATION

High School diploma or equivalent required.

Minimum of 1 manual drafting and two AutoCAD classes.

Classes in an AutoCAD based 3D modeling programs is a plus (Plant3D, CadWorx).

AAS in Drafting Technology or Technical School certificate is a plus.

Classes in piping design and plant layout are a plus.

SKILLS

Must have good communication skills (verbal and written).

Must have good computer skills with basic proficiency in Windows and MS Office software (Excel, Word, Outlook).

Must be proficient in AutoCAD and 3D Modeling software, preferably CadWorx or Plant3D, and be able to draft and model with precision.

Must have a good knowledge of the piping components, materials, ratings, etc... commonly used in the petrochemical industry.

Must have good knowledge of drafting symbology used for PFDs, P&IDs, (Including Instrumentation), piping plans, sections, details, and isometrics.

Must be able to identify common piping components in the field (Pipe, Valves, Fittings, Instruments).

Must be able to comprehend engineering related specifications and reference manuals and apply to design applications.

Must have experience in executing field work and field survey related activities.

Must have current driver’s license, a car, and proof of insurance.

EXPERIENCE: Five (5) or more years piping drafting/design experience, preferably in petrochemical/chemical plants and refineries. Prefer some field survey experience.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. The work is approximately 90% office and 10% in the field at plant sites. The employee is regularly required to stand, walk, and climb ladders and stairs while performing the duties of this job, and sit for extended periods of time at a computer. Must be able to express or exchange ideas by means of the spoken word and perceive the nature of sounds at normal speaking levels with or without correction. Must have the ability to receive detailed information through oral communication, and to make the discriminations in sound. The employee is required to have close visual acuity to perform an activity such as preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal; and extensive reading.
