Composite Materials Chemist / Scientist

Duties:
The Specialties Group is working on developing new technologies, including binder and sizing chemistries, and novel new applications in 3D printing. This is a very GENERAL job description. This group will not be focused on patenting, publications, or long-term research, but novel, APPLIED new product development.
What You Will Do…
Leads and conducts high quality lab work that is needed for development, commercialization, industrialization, and troubleshooting of vinyl ester and polyester based products for sale into the composites industry
Researches industry trade publications and patent databases to better understand the nature of existing technology and works with legal experts for the creation of patentable technology
Applies creativity and imagination to developing innovative products needed in existing and emerging markets
Becomes proficient at operating application-specific equipment related to Additive Manufacturing. This will include CAD design, creation and editing of slicing programs / code, operating a large-scale 3D printer and a 3-axis CNC
Coordinates research and analysis activities related to new product development including mechanical and thermal characterization of polymers, compounded products, and composites according to their end-use application
Interprets results of laboratory activities to laboratory personnel and management
Advises management and technical colleagues of activities, new technologies, or competitive products or technologies
Prepares reports and technical papers for publication in trade journals or other publications, when directed by management
Serves as technical lead and liaison to target customerâ s research team while qualification testing is being completed
Provides technical service to target customers during beta testing which may include travel to the customerâ s location and working closely with the customerâ s R&D / Manufacturing staff
Keeps laboratory notebook neat and orderly and according to legal guidelines for patent submissions
Uses experimental design and mixture designs to develop robust new products or product improvements
Assist with the creation of application-oriented Technical Data Sheets and Material Safety Data Sheets for developed products
Uses company-specific project planning software to coordinate multiple projects, keep management appraised of progress, and meets schedules
Keeps abreast of new resins and processes
Perform job duties and obtain training in accordance with our Quality Management System (ISO9001)

Contributes to the establishment and attainment of a positive and team-oriented environment
Follows safety rules and regulations to ensure a safe working environment
Creates new test methods as needed to ascertain the utility of new products related to end-user applications or manufacturing processes
Leads and consults with the Synthesis Group as needed when new resins are needed for a customerâ s specific application
Leads and consults with the Applications Group when new products are being evaluated and / or compared to competitive products

Technical Qualifications:
Masterâ s degree in chemistry, polymer science, materials science, or related field. A PhD in Composites related research is preferred
3 to 5 yearsâ of progressive experience and /or a combination of training in advanced composites field, or an equivalent combination of education, experience, and / or training are required
Demonstrated proficiency in end use formulation and evaluation
Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, is required
Experience in Additive Manufacturing or aptitude to learn related software and hardware
Must have composite laboratory experience including analytical testing, HPLC, FTIR, DMA, DSC, TGA, etc., and mechanical testing. Autoclave operations is a plus
Multi-lingual skills are not required but may be beneficial
