Job Description

The Machine Operator I proficiently performs a wide variety of machine operations required for the fabrication of steel parts and assemblies using a variety of steel fabrication equipment for one (1) of the following work areas including the laser, press brake, punch, saw, tube bender, or drills. Maintains equipment in a safe and clean condition and performs other duties in support of successful plant operations and customer satisfaction.

Measures, marks, and scribes dimensions and reference points on material or work piece as guides, and or places material/work piece against stops for subsequent processing.

Starts and observes machine operation, to detect malfunctions or out-of-tolerance operation and adjusts machine controls or controls media as required. Calculates and sets controls to regulate factors such as speed, feed, coolant flow, and depth and angle of cut; or enters commands to retrieve, input, or edit computerized machine control media.

Verifies conformance/quality of finished work piece to specifications.

Effectively communicates with co-workers and internal customers. Display attributes of a team player and positive role model.

Selects, aligns and loads tooling, bits, blades, cutting tools and consumables on or in machines such as mills, lathes, drills, saws, brakes and lasers, and lathes.

Confers with engineers, production personnel, programmers, or others to resolve machining or assembly problems.

Trains others as directed.

Keeps work area clean and orderly, performs required PM’s and calibrates on machines and equipment and reports all non-conformities to Line Lead, Supervisor or Maintenance until the problem has been rectified.

Works with little to no supervision.

Requirements

Qualifications and Essential Skills:

0-2 years of experience; previous manufacturing experience preferred.

Prior experience and/or training operating a drill press, saw, shear, press brake and/or CNC equipment preferred.

Basic computer skills are required; must be able to use computer systems to look-up information, clock-in/clock-out, and report work activities. Experience with Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook is preferred.

Ability to read blueprints.

Good math skills are required; ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.

Ability to read a tape measure up to 1/32”.

Experience with hand tools including power tools such as impact drivers and drills.

Laser:

Prior experience and/or training operating laser cutting equipment preferred. Prior experience or training in CNC operation or programming a plus.

Prior thermal cutting experience preferred.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus. The employee is frequently required to balance, climb ladders, or work on platforms to access elevated equipment.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts, fumes or airborne particles, and vibration, and occasionally exposed to risk of electrical shock. Employee may be exposed to hazardous chemicals. Employee is required to wear steel toed shoes, gloves, and safety glasses. The noise level in the plant shop environment is moderately loud. In addition to standard PPE, welders are required to wear a welding helmet and may be required to wear leather clothing and ear plugs. Handles hazardous waste according to company policy and participates in annual hazardous waste training.
