Position Summary: Works collaboratively with the Director of Advanced Practice Providers to provide leadership and support in the day to day management and strategic planning for the advanced practice providers. Acts at a lead-level, providing guidance, direction, and assistance to the advanced practice providers, encompassing the role of clinical expert, role model, consultant, educator, practitioner, and nurse leader. Represents APPs with leadership and physicians, collaborating to assure the goal of providing the best oncology experience and highest quality care possible for our patients and job satisfaction/retention for our Advanced practice providers.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Advanced Practice Provider Leadership:

Assures quality of care by developing and maintaining advanced practice guidelines/collaborative agreements in accordance with state boards and other governing bodies rules/regs

Participates in the recruitment, selection, onboarding and ongoing training process for all new NP/PAs.

Contributes to high quality provider development through ongoing coaching and monitoring, as well as appraising providers through performance reviews in collaboration with supervising physician and Director of APP.

Coordinates and leads APP council in collaboration with the Director of APP

Coordinates regular communication avenues with APP staff to increase collaboration and professional practice

Coordinates participation of APPs in established clinic committees

Collaborates on development of metrics to help evaluate performance

2. Operations:

Collaborates on assignments for the team, particularly the Float and PRN staff.

Provides direction for coverage as needed in absences of staff

Coordinates with Director of APP vacation, leave time, and professional time off.

Collaborates on appropriate policies and procedures that govern the APP practice

3. Clinical Practice Expert:

Provides advanced level of direct and indirect care to individual patients/families and/or groups of patients/families in collaboration with physicians and interdisciplinary team members.

Provides direct patient care for assigned patient population a minimum of 60% of the time

Meets patient care requirements as defined in Advanced Practice Provider Job role:

Assesses and examines patients.

Orders and interprets diagnostic lab and radiology.

Plans and orders treatments.

Writes history, physical, and orders for hospital admission.

Communicates and consults with physicians regarding patients.

Dictates notes for office visits letters for patients.

Reviews pathology and records of new patients. Obtains missing information if needed.

Identifies patients eligible for research trials in conjunction with MD and research staff.

Provides continuity of care when a physician is out of the office.

Interfaces with internal and external departments and providers regarding patient’s charts, appointments and patient treatment.

Respects the dignity and confidentiality of patients.

4. Education/Clinical Staff Development:

Provides leadership and collaborates with other health professionals and educational resources to establish education programs to address the specific needs of APP staff.

Coordinates orientation of new hires and ongoing training opportunities for all APPs

Assists APP team members with credentialing or maintenance of required CEUs

Encourages participation in APP organizations at local and national level

Encourages and mentors APPs toward certification in specialty organization

5. Evidence-Based Consultant & Researcher:

Demonstrates collaborative leadership with physicians, research staff, and other clinical experts to generate knowledge and make practice changes based on evidence based/research findings

Collaborates on organizational and departmental quality improvement processes and guides practice change based on those results.

Assists in development of policies and procedures that define professional practice

Demonstrates accountability for professional responsibilities and self-development.

6. Performs other duties as assigned

Qualifications/Experience:

Must hold advanced practice licensure/ certification as required by the state of Tennessee. If Nurse Practitioner, must hold RN license for the state of Tennessee. Certificate to prescribe is required; current DEA required. Certified in Basic Cardiac Life Support required.

5 years’ work experience in oncology as an Advanced Practice Provider; 5 years’ employment at West Cancer Center and Research Institute preferred. Certification in practice specialty area preferred (ONCC, etc). Experience in training/mentoring staff required.

Must have demonstrated leadership skills; excellent organization and follow-up skills; excellent verbal and written communication skills; excellent problem-solving skills; ability to organize and prioritize work assignments; ability to handle multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment; ability to analyze situations and respond in a timely manner; ability to participate in multi-functional teams; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships within The West Clinic and with outside referral facilities. Must be proficient in computer applications including word processing and e-mail. Additional hours may be required.

Work Environment/Physical Demands/Travel:

Frequent invasive and non-invasive patient contact.

Exposure to patient body fluids as well as exposure to hazardous or poisonous materials.

Exposure to excessive heat or cold as required.

Ability to react quickly to emergency situations.

Handling or administering of narcotics.

Ability to read and write to communicate orally and in writing with other individuals.

Ability to lift and carry up to 25 lbs. without assistance and push and pull up to 50 lbs.

Ability to sit in one place, stand, walk, squat, kneel, reach, twist, crawl, and bend throughout the shift.

Ability to perform repetitive hand and wrist motion, as well as using hands for gripping and squeezing.

Ability to use hands and feet together for repetitive coordinated motions.

Good hand-eye coordination.
