The Accountant at Greenpeace Africa will be responsible for collecting, recording, keeping track and reporting all financial information of the regional office, ensuring finance systems are optimal and functioning in line with Greenpeace Africa policies, procedures and guidelines.

They will be expected to communicate the financial status of the regional office to guide and inform management and stakeholders for appropriate decision making.

Key Responsibilities Administer the purchase ledger, ensuring timely invoice processing, payment, and reconciliation of bank and credit/debit card accounts.

Record and pay invoices following authorization, ensuring accuracy and timeliness in the accounting system.

Maintain an overview of outstanding invoices, expected charges, and monthly creditor reconciliations.

Review and reconcile expense claims in accordance with Greenpeace International (GPI) policies.

Manage petty cash, ensuring accurate record-keeping and regular reconciliation.

Administer bank accounts to ensure efficient and effective cash flow within Greenpeace Africa.

Maintain and organize financial documents, ensuring they are accessible and comply with local and organizational requirements.

Conduct balance sheet reconciliations, including fixed assets, advance accounts, and control accounts.

Compile and file monthly EMP and VAT returns, liaising with the South African Revenue Service (SARS) as needed.

Manage the monthly payroll cycle and reconciliations for the South African office.

Requirements Qualifications and experience University degree in Accounting and/or Finance, or an equivalent.

Experience working for a SAICA approved auditing firm essential.

Completed articles at a registered chartered accountancy (South Africa) essential.

Required skills and behaviours Advanced knowledge of Excel Ability to work independently with minimal supervision Must be proactive and results oriented Knowledge of International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) for SMEs Experience working with multi-currencies.
