Position Title: Laborer

Department: Public Grounds

Location: 1 Twilight Drive, Charleston

Number of open positions: 4

Anticipated Start Date: June 3, 2024

End Date: August 9, 2024

Hours of work per week: 35

Business/Work Hours: 6:30am -2:30 pm Mon-Fri

Pay Rate: $12

General Description:

The purpose of this class within the organization is to implement a variety of community, recreational, cultural, special events, and other programs at City of Charleston designated facilities for youth ages 16 - 20 years of age. Program employment dates are June 3, 2024 - August 9, 2024, and may be extended based on employee availability and departmental needs.

Work hours: Maximum 35 hours per week.

This class works under close supervision according to set procedures.

Responsibilities, tasks, and projects:

Picking up litter

Weeding, mulching, plant maintenance and applicable clean up

Operate weed trimmer.

Operate lawn mower.

Operate leaf blower.

Collect and change trash bags.

All other duties as assigned.

Candidate requirements:

Must have reliable transportation to and from work.

Must be 16 years of age or older.

Ability to lift up to 60 pounds.

Ability to walk more than 6 hours per day.

Ability to work from a kneeling position.

Ability to bend comfortably.

Ability to complete job assignments in unfavorable weather conditions such as heat and light rain.

Provide your own lunch, sunscreen, and insect repellant.

Dress Code:

Clothing appropriate for manual labor to include footwear such as boots or comfortable durable sneakers, t-shirts (long or short sleeved with no political or inappropriate images/text), long jeans or work pants. Public Grounds will provide a high visibility safety vest.

Additional Qualifications:

Must have the ability to provide documentation verifying legal work status.

Ability to read and speak the English language proficiently in order to communicate and interact with others; to understand and interpret safety instructions; and to respond to internal and external inquiries.

Ability to understand and comply with City and departmental guidelines, policies, procedures, and expectations.
