We are seeking a Licensed Surveyor for various projects throughout Virginia. This position is based out of our Troy (Charlottesville) office. Summary/Objective

The Surveyor will provide technical information to company supervisors and crews to ensure work complies with all engineering standards, codes, specifications, design instructions and locations.

Required Education and Experience

High School Diploma or equivalent

3-5 years of survey experience in Heavy civil construction.

Experience with AutoCAD, Trimble & Topcon, Total Station Robotic Survey Equipment, and GPS machine control support.

Comprehensive knowledge of industry standards and specialty bridge design software; must be proficient with MS Office.

Competency in reading civil construction plans.

Valid Driver License

Ideal applicant is willing to travel and provide layout for multiple projects concurrently. May involve overnight travel in Virginia/North Carolina.

Virginia Licensed Land Surveyor

Knowledge/skills

Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry and utilize Construction Math concepts including calculating rate, ratio, and percent. Draw and interpret bar graphs.

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.

Thorough understanding of the methods and calculations involved in leveling, traversing, topo surveys, construction surveys, mapping, and determining volumes.

In-depth knowledge of a wide variety of heavy highway construction/survey practices, procedures and principles.

Read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.

Tasks and Activities of the Surveyor

Interpret survey data and calculates geodetic measurements to determine shapes, positions, and elevations of geomorphic and topographic features, ensuring angles, distance, and information are accurate and conform to regulations and standards

Use drawings and specs to layout points as needed on jobsite and provide grade staking for excavations, grading, and site. Checking and re-checking of established control points, points laid out, elevations, calculations, etc. to ensure accuracy.

Use satellite-based global positioning systems (GPS), theodolites, levels, and transits to determine longitudes and latitudes of important boundaries and/or features in the survey area.

Create, manage and maintain project layout and construction data and perform and assist with Quality Control on data produced.

Promote, execute and adhere to the company’s safety program, and encourage all employees, sub-contractors and consultants to adopt safety as a culture.

Position Type and Expected Hours of Work

This is a full-time, non-exempt position; typical work hours and days are Monday through Friday, 7:00am to 4:00pm. Weekend and after-hours work is expected. Hours worked in excess of 40 hours per week are eligible for overtime pay.
