Under regular supervision, performs semi-skilled and unskilled work by cleaning ditches, performing work clearing rights-of-ways, and performing other special projects as assigned.

Job Responsibilities

Cuts grass, trees, and brush as needed to clear and/or maintain right-of-ways using weed eater, chainsaw, and other hand tools.

Conducts general duties (such as cleaning up around assigned areas, maintaining equipment, etc.).

Provides assistance as necessary in emergency situations and during after-hours or inclement weather conditions.

Provides assistance to coworkers as required to promote safety and efficiency; may be assigned to orient and train new employees in the performance of job duties.

Receives and/or reviews various forms, reports, correspondence, policies, directories, manuals, reference materials, or other documentation such as job orders, etc.

Prepares and/or processes a variety of documentation associated with department operations, per established procedures and within designated timeframes; reviews various documentation for accuracy and completeness; distributes/issues various documentation.

Refers to safety and operation manual, policy and procedure manuals, codes/laws/regulations, publications and reference texts, etc.

Operates and uses a variety of tools, equipment, and machinery (such as weed eater, chainsaw, pole saw, etc.).

Uses a variety of tools (such as wheelbarrow, etc.).; and a variety of supplies (such as gas, oil, grass seeds, etc.).

Interacts and communicates with various groups and individuals (such as Crew Leader, Stormwater Manager, coworkers, other Town employees, home owners, and the general public.).

Performs related duties as required.

Minimum Education and Experience

Requires a high school diploma or GED equivalent with no experience necessary; or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities. Must possess valid state driver’s license.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities-Laborer

Knowledge of the methods, policies, and procedures of the Parks and Recreation Department as they pertain to the performance of duties of the Maintenance Worker.

Knowledge of the laws, ordinances, standards and regulations pertaining to the specific duties and responsibilities of the position.

Knowledge of basic principles and practices of park and grounds maintenance, and general construction.

Knowledge of the use and safe operation of tools and equipment required to perform department functions.

Knowledge of safety standards and practices for areas of responsibility. Has knowledge of basic record-keeping techniques.

Knowledge of basic arithmetic.

Ability to understand and apply pertinent regulations, policies, procedures, codes and ordinances; perform required maintenance work according to plans, specifications, and standards of quality and safety.

Knowledge of and ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.

Ability to work as a team member in achieving work goals in a timely manner.

Ability to plan, organize, and prioritize daily assignments and work activities.

Ability to learn and utilize new skills and information to improve job performance and efficiency.

Ability to compare and/or judge the readily observable functional, structural or compositional characteristics (whether similar to or divergent from obvious standards) of data, people or things.

Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.

Ability to prepare accurate and complete work and maintenance records.

Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with personnel of other departments, professionals and members of the public through contact and cooperation. Is able to operate equipment with safety.

Ability to maintain assigned vehicles, equipment and tools.

Ability to react calmly and quickly in emergency situations.

Ability to perform duties effectively despite exposure to temperature/weather extremes, humidity, machinery hazards, dusts, pollen, dirt, noise, electric currents, odors, fumes, vibrations, etc.

Physical Requirements

Tasks involve the regular and at times sustained performance of moderately physically demanding work, typically involving some combination of climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching and crawling, and the lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of moderately heavy objects and materials (up to 50 pounds) and occasionally heavier weight (up to 100 pounds).
