Job Description

The Jr Software Developer will work on implementation the indexing recommendations of the MEDLINE 2022 Steering Committee for PubMed – free resource supporting the search and retrieval of biomedical and life sciences literature with the aim of improving health – both globally and personally. Position focused on running and improving the NLM Medical Text Indexer (MTI) pipeline which maps citation text to concepts in Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) to facilitate the retrieval of biomedical information in PubMed.

Required Skills

2+ years of relevant Computer Programming experience in a Linux environment

Proficiency in the "C" programming language

Fluency in at least one of the following scripting languages: bash, sh, csh, or tsh

Experience with open source projects and source version control software

Desired Skills

Experience working with genetic and biological data

Experience with Java and/or Python programming languages

Experience with RDBMS such as MySQL or Berkeley DB

Experience with PubMed Eutils interface

Experience with MeSH Vocabulary

Experience with CI/CD pipelines, unit tests, integration and regression testing, source version control (Git, GitHub, Subversion)

Experience working within a Cloud environment

Job Responsibilities

Be able to work autonomously

Responsible for updating, maintaining, and fixing the NLM Medical Text Indexer (MTI) software and related databases.

Work with a diverse group of scientists, bioinformaticians and other developers across the center to implement efficient bioinformatics algorithms and to further advance the usefulness of Automatic Indexing.

Learn new technologies, keep up with the internal systems, and share your knowledge with the team.
