ODNR owns and manages state parks, state forests, state nature preserves and wildlife areas. We license all hunting, fishing and watercraft; oversee and permit all mineral extraction, monitor dam safety, manage water resources and serve as the second largest Law Enforcement presence in the State of Ohio.

We are accepting applications for Natural Resources Technician 1 – Olentangy Wildlife Research Station (1 position available - Franklin County) within the Division of Wildlife, within the state of Ohio. What you will do…

Assist with avian monitoring research using Passive Acoustic Monitoring (PAM) via autonomous recording units (ARUs)

Operate ARU recorders in the field to monitor a variety of bird species.

Maintain trail cameras to monitor turkey and grouse.

Conduct in-person bird surveys, collect habitat information in grassland and forest setting and capture and band migratory game birds.

Process acoustic recordings using BirdNet.

Preferred Qualifications...

Knowledge of wildlife biology through the completion of at least 2 year/4 semesters of post-high school education towards a degree in wildlife biology, wildlife management or related field.

Experience or training with identification by sight and sound of Midwest birds; experience with off-road navigation and travel; ability to accurately record data and ability to work early, long hours in sometimes unpleasant conditions (heat/humidity, biting insects, etc.).

Duration…

May 2024 - October 2024

Work Hours/Work Conditions…

Up to 40 hours per week.

May include unusual working hours (early mornings and/or late evenings), some overnight travel.

May include conditions ranging from extreme cold/rain/snow to high heat and humidity, possible exposure to biting insects/wildlife and poisonous plants, riding as a passenger in an aircraft (fixed wing or helicopter) and physical exertion (foot travel off-trail among hills of eastern Ohio, lifting and carrying equipment).

This is a 1000 hour intermittent (unclassified) position for the Division of Wildlife. The location for this position includes:

Olentangy Wildlife Research Station, Franklin County

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Formal education in arithmetic that includes addition, subtraction, multiplication & division & in reading & speaking common English vocabulary; valid driver’s license; valid Commercial Driver’s License required if motor equipment is of type & size regulated by Section 4506.01 & 4506.12 of Ohio Revised Code.
