Position Summary, Job Requirements & Responsibilities:

What We’re Looking For:

If you are passionate about space and deploying disruptive space technology, we want to talk to you! Iridium is seeking a motivated Senior Engineer, Optical Ground Entry Point for a Space Development Agency (SDA) project. As a Senior Engineer, Optical GEP you’ll be responsible for identifying and autonomously implementing delivery of high-quality results and solutions. In this role, you’ll assist with numerous technical aspects of the architecture and design of the ground segment. You will thrive in this role if you have a desire to be part of a team on the forefront of one of the most advanced satellite constellations in the world.

This position requires the possession of or ability to obtain an active/current Top Secret/SCI U.S. Security Clearance with the ability to obtain CI Polygraph (A U.S. Security Clearance that has been active in the past 24 months is considered active).

What You’ll Do:

Use advanced knowledge to drive and define line of business/functional knowledge, ensuring system engineering best practices and processes are applied to ground and payload controller systems developed for various external projects

Work independently to perform requirements analysis, definition, decomposition, and management for Space and Ground Segments

Work closely with other project System Engineers on current government-based projects

Be responsible for exercising technical authority over projects

Work closely with program managers and other key stakeholders to determine resource needs, technical development schedules and major milestones

Conduct required system analysis (functional & performance), interface definition, and detailed trade studies, analyzing multiple data sources to respond to frequent, complex, and high impact situations

Collaborate with the technical team in support of major reviews such as: Systems Requirements Review (SRR), Preliminary Design Review (PDR), Critical Design Review (CDR), Test Readiness Review (TRR), and Operations Readiness Review (ORR) as well as Program Increment Demonstrations

Be accountable for the coordination and delivery of technical assignments designed with end goals in mind

Be accountable for ensuring that projects meet technical performance targets, deliver quality results, and activities are well-designed and meet overall project objectives

Play a key role in making strategic project decisions and provide system engineering best practices in program design and delivery, utilizing critical thinking skills to better design new or developing systems

Experience & Education Requirements / EEO:

What You’ll Need to Succeed:

Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or other related field OR equivalent relevant experience in lieu of a degree

8+ years of relevant experience

Strong knowledge of system engineering methodologies and AGILE processes

Strong familiarity with tools and software applications that support system engineering best practices

Excellent communication skills, with the ability to clearly convey products, deliverables, analyses, and/or issues to groups outside of your team or those who are unfamiliar with the topic

Have confidence and be able to easily build relationships with leadership and colleagues outside of your team

Possess an analytical mindset, with the ability to understand a situation or problem and think critically to make decisions and come up with out-of-the-box solutions

Be proactive in providing feedback and be enthusiastic in sharing your knowledge with others

Capable of prioritizing your own tasks and potentially the tasks of others while making sure deadlines are met

Things That Would be Great if You Brought to the Table:

Experience in the Satellite Ground Terminal (Radio Frequency and Optical) industry

Knowledge and experience with Radio Frequency (RF) and Optical satellite terminals

Knowledge and experience with designing, developing, and operating Space Vehicle Subsystems

Knowledge and experience with designing, developing, and operating various Command and Control Systems (i.e: OS Comet, InControl, etc.)

Knowledge and experience with aspects of the Hardware Software Development Life Cycle process

Programming languages such as: Java, Java-Script, Python, Shell scripting

Working knowledge of networking protocols, routers, switches, etc.

Familiarity with Atlassian Tool Suite such JIRA, R4J and Confluence

We’ll also need you to:

Be able to travel up to 25%

Be a US Citizen with no dual citizenships

Be able to work in the office at least 2 days a week to foster collaboration with the team and stakeholders

Work Environment:

This position primarily works in the company office or in a home office. The position is largely sedentary with the majority of the position sitting in a chair and working with a computer. The role uses basic office equipment including a phone, video, computer, keyboard, mouse and printer. For meetings in-person, this position will need to be able stand, walk within the office and climb stairs on occasion.
