Title: General Foreperson

Type: Full-time

Reports To: Project Manager

JOB SUMMARY: The General Foreperson is a vital part of the Wright Tree Service of Canada team, overseeing multiple crews and projects. This is a full-time position available immediately in the Winnipeg, Manitoba area.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

Supervise line clearance crews and is responsible for the proper administration, communication, and enforcement of supervisory and economic work practices.

Assign work to individual crew members and supervise crew in carrying out work according to good tree clearance practices. Must be capable of adjusting to field requirements.

Works in collaboration with Human Resources regarding employment for crew members including, but not limited to, hiring, discipline, separation of employment, leaves of absence, as well as policy compliance regarding employment for crew members.

Promote sound relationships with employees on all personnel matters and exercise fair and reasonable judgment in management of employee conflicts, in cooperation with Human Resources.

Evaluates crew members’ performance to determine promotions/performance. Ensure crew members have consistent performance reviews for opportunities to advance.

Receive and interpret tree trimming, removal, and chemical application orders initiated by supervisor or the Utility, involving an understanding of drawings and symbols representing types of line, voltages, and line equipment.

Conduct safety training of assigned staff in accordance with workplace health and safety legislation, regulations and training procedures. Conduct stands downs and tailgate training as applicable.

Responsible for control of crew costs including effective use of manpower, work methods, proper amount of trimming, and operation of equipment.

Financial management of contract job costs, budgets and accruals.

Keep informed of new equipment specifications, standard practices and operating procedures.

Responsible for the maintenance and accuracy of all records and reports related to the performance of the crew’s operation.

Investigates accident reports, damage claims, and may be a designated representative to settle minor damage or injury claims.

Promptly reports and communicates near misses, incidents and worker’s compensation claims, return to work status on current claims, etc. Inform and communicate with the HSE team regarding training opportunities, concerns, and problem areas.

Remain in contact with customers, property owners, general public, other contractors, and representatives of utilities and governmental agencies. Must be professional and courteous when communicating on behalf of Wright Tree Service of Canada, Ltd.

Support, actively participate, and act in accordance with Wright Canada Holdings’ culture of safety and employee ownership.

Comply with applicable federal, provincial and local laws, rules, and regulations; maintains knowledge of and follows all company policies and procedures.

Maintain regular and punctual attendance at work and meetings.

Position may require some outside travel.

During emergencies or natural disasters may be required to be on duty for the duration of the disaster.

Other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

5+ years of experience in utility vegetation management or related forestry field and/or experience within the utility tree care industry.

Valid Certified Utility Arborist certificate

Current ISA certification or ability to obtain certification.

Possess excellent leadership skills and be able to handle stressful situations along with the ability to multi-task.

Pesticide Applicator license considered an asset.

Valid First-Aid and CPR certificates.

Knowledge of Electrical Utility Code pertaining to the province of Manitoba

Knowledge of the Canadian Standards Association (CSA) pertaining to vegetation management around electrical equipment.

Knowledge and understanding of relevant OH & S rules and guidelines.

Wear the necessary personal protective equipment (PPE) as required.

Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record. Airbrakes endorsement is an asset.

CSTS, WHMIS, and TDG certifications preferred.

Proficient in Microsoft Office including Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint

Demonstrate excellent customer service focusing on rapport-building, listening, questioning and patience. Communicates effectively with all levels of employees, both technical and non-technical.

Ability to read, write and speak English sufficient to perform job duties and to interact and communicate with employees, clients and vendors.

Flexibility with traveling in and out of town, via plane and/or vehicle.

Ability to travel and work in rugged terrain and inclement weather.

Proficient in map navigation skills and orienteering.

Ability to adapt to a dynamic, fast-paced, and ever-changing environment.
