Typist (Spanish Speaking) #1020124 (Open Competitive) Final Filing Date: 05/03/2024 Exam Date: 06/01/2024 Typists perform routine clerical work which involves the operation of equipment requiring the manipulation of a standard alphanumeric keyboard in accordance with standards of acceptable levels of production.

The types of equipment used to produce correspondence, reports, charts, etc.

include typewriters (Spanish and English) and Electronic Word Processing Equipment, CRT Terminals, Personal Computers, Data Terminals and Printers.

This position is also characterized by a broad responsibility for the performance of non-typing clerical tasks.

Work is routine in nature, however, as incumbents gain experience on assignments and unit activities, additional and more complex duties are added.

These additional duties do not reach the difficulty or complexity of work associated with the senior level of this series.

Although detailed instructions are given for new or difficult assignments with procedures that are definitely fixed, incumbents must exercise independent judgment in applying them to specific cases.

Work is reviewed either by observation, periodic or spot checks, cross checking by others or by checking the completed work.

The position differs from Typist in that the incumbent operates both Spanish and English typewriters, translates both the Spanish and English languages and must speak the Spanish language fluently.

No supervision is exercised over other employees.

Works directly with Spanish-speaking individuals; Types correspondence, reports, documents, records and other materials from various sources under varying degrees of direction using equipment with the alphanumeric keyboard, i.e.

typewriters (Spanish and English languages), word processing equipment, CRT terminals, personal computers, data terminals and printers: * sets up, makes adjustments and operates a variety of equipment in order to produce a typed copy from a variety of sources; * proofreads typed copy and makes corrections; * composes and types routine correspondence and memoranda from verbal and/or written instructions.

Performs a variety of non-typing clerical tasks as assigned; Files and maintains records, reports and other documents: * checks for clerical accuracy and completeness; * opens, dates, sorts, distributes and files mail; * sorts, indexes and files bills, requisitions, ledger cards and other material alphabetically and/or numerically; * posts and makes entries from original sources and maintains records, bills, control cards and ledgers; * makes file searches and pulls needed material.

Issues and records licenses, permits and applications; Collects fees and accounts for monies received; Maintains time reports and payroll data; Assists in compiling data, statistics and other basic information for research purposes; Answers telephone or switchboard: takes messages and gives routine information in both Spanish and English languages; May act as receptionist, directing callers to proper persons or sources of information; Translates both the Spanish and English languages; Assists in the input of data in computer terminal; May operate mimeograph, copy machines, microfilm, simple computing and other office machines; Performs related duties as required.

Open Competitive Graduation from High School, Business School, GED or Equivalency Diploma, including or supplemented by a course in typing or keyboarding.

Applicants must have the ability to fluently speak and translate the English and Spanish language, both orally and in writing.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: All applicants must submit a school transcript verifying a successful typing or keyboarding course.

Online computer training courses will not be accepted.

SUBJECT OF EXAMINATION - Written Test Relative Weight 100% Spanish Language Oral Test Qualifying NOTE: Candidates must pass the written examination and the qualifying Spanish Language Oral Test.

The written test will be administered on the date listed.

Only candidates successful on the written portion of the exam will be called to the Spanish Language Oral Test scheduled for a later date.

EXAMINATION WILL TEST FOR KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND/OR ABILITIES IN SUCH AREAS AS: 1.) Spelling 2.) Alphabetizing 3.) Recordkeeping 4.) Clerical Operations with Letters and Numbers THE USE OF A CALCULATOR IS ALLOWED FOR THIS EXAMINATION NOTE: Candidates have the option of bringing a hand-held, battery- or solar- powered calculator to the test room unless specifically notified that their use is prohibited.

Devices with typewriter keyboards, spell checkers, personal digital assistants, address books, language translators, dictionaries, cell phones or any similar devices are prohibited.

You may not bring books or other reference material.

Cell phones and any other electronic devices are also prohibited.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION REGARDING THE SPANISH LANGUAGE ORAL TEST The qualifying Spanish Language Oral Test is designed to evaluate the candidate's Spanish language proficiency against a standard appropriate for this position.

Only candidates successful on the written portion of the exam will be eligible to participate in the Spanish Oral Test.

The Spanish Oral Test will be administered at a later date.

Only successful candidates on the written test will be notified of the date, time and place of the Spanish Oral Test.

Candidates must pass the written and Spanish Oral Language test to be eligible for appointment.

Note: No qualifying Spanish Language Oral Test will be required if a candidate has successfully qualified in a previous Spanish Language Oral Test for examination purposes administered by the Buffalo Civil Service office.

EXPANDED SUBTEST DESCRIPTION: 1.) SPELLING: These questions test your ability to spell words that are used in written business communications.

2.) ALPHABETIZING: These questions test your ability to file material in alphabetical order.

3.) RECORD KEEPING: These questions evaluate your ability to perform common record keeping tasks.

The test consists of two or more "sets" of questions; each set concerning a different problem.

Typical record keeping problems might involve the organization or collation of data from several sources; scheduling; maintaining a record system using running balances; or completion of a table summarizing data using totals, subtotals, averages and percents.

4.) CLERICAL OPERATIONS WITH LETTERS AND NUMBERS: These questions test your skills and abilities in clerical operations involving, comparing, checking and counting.

The questions require you to follow the specific directions given for each question which may involve alphabetizing, comparing, checking and counting given groups of letters and/or numbers.

Department of Civil Service in accordance with Section 23-2 of the Civil Service Law, and the provisions of the N.Y.S.

Civil service Rules and Regulations dealing with the rating and review of exams apply.

(If not attached, expanded subtest descriptions may be obtained from the Civil Service office, Room 1001 City Hall.) IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR USE OF VETERAN'S CREDITS If you are currently serving on active duty in the Armed Forces of the United States, you may apply for veteran's credits.

These veteran's credits shall be granted on a conditional basis at time of establishment of the eligible list.

You will be restricted from certification using these credits until you have received an honorable discharge or release under honorable conditions.

Your DD214 must be presented as proof of service during war time, before you can be certified for appointment from the eligible list using these credits.

Special Requirement for Appointment in School Districts and BOCES Per Chapter 180 of the Laws of 2000, and by Regulations of the Commissioner of Education, to be employed in a position designated by a school district or BOCES as involving direct contact with students, a clearance for employment from the State Education Department is required.

NOTICE TO EXAM PARTICIPANTS: Additional Points Available to Children of Police Officers and Firefighters Killed in the Line of Duty (New Section 85-a, NYS Civil Service Law, effective 9/17/02) On September 17, 2002, Governor Pataki signed into law a bill adding a new section 85-a to the Civil Service Law granting additional credit on civil service examinations for children of firefighters and police officers killed in the line of duty.

This law is to take effect immediately.

"In conformance with Section 85-a of the Civil Service Law, children of firefighters and police officers killed in the line of duty shall be entitled to receive an additional ten points in a competitive examination for original appointment in the same municipality in which his or her parent has served.

If you are qualified to participate in this examination and are a child of a firefighter or police officer killed in the line of duty in this municipality, please inform this office of this matter when you submit your application for examination.

A candidate claiming such credit has a minimum of two months from the application deadline to provide the necessary documentation to verify additional credit eligibility.

However, no credit may be added after the eligible list has been established." Applicants claiming these points must do so in writing (you may enclose in application), indicating the name, title, relationship and place of employment of the deceased parent.

Eligibility for points will be reviewed and applicants may be required to submit additional information to verify the claim.
