Overview:
We are seeking a full-time Process Engineer 2 in our Olathe, KS location with the Mechanical Assembly Team. In this role, you will be responsible for complex process development and the support of multiple aviation units, the creation of work cell environments and the justification and procurement of equipment needed while operating in a team-oriented environment.
The Mechanical Assembly Team (MAT) is responsible for the unit level assembly and packaging of all Garmin products. Most of the units are assembled in a work cell environment by manual or semi-automated methods. The Process Engineer’s main responsibility is to design work areas that produce the highest quality product, in the shortest amount of time, using the most economical method, while delivering a product that exceeds the customer’s expectations.
Responsibilities:
Essential Functions
May serve as a leader for small projects or sub projects for a new unit in development or a group of mature units following established procedures
Develop more complex process instructions for manufacturing associates
Research and develop new, cutting-edge automation concept to meet the process
Estimate level of effort for a task including calculating build times
Attend continuous improvement meetings and serve as a member of Kaizen teams
Collaborate and add value through participation in design reviews, apply design for manufacturability guidelines to design reviews, and provide alternative solutions as appropriate
Assess factory associates for certification to a process
Develop designed experiments for process and quality improvements
Analyze processes for quality improvements and provide justification for purchases
Demonstrate excellent communication skills in collaboration with vendors that produce custom parts or equipment
Analyze data to determine quality trends, find technical root causes and implement corrective actions for given problems
Design custom tooling as needed for specific applications using CAD software tools
Provide reliable solutions to a variety of problems using sound problem solving techniques
Serve as a mentor to less experienced process engineers (Process Engineer 1)
Apply a sense of urgency, commitment and focus on the right priorities in developing solutions in a timely fashion and participate in recruiting activities as assigned
Ability to travel domestically and internationally on occasion
Design, test and validate all aspects of the mechanical design
Model moderately complex parts and assemblies in 3D CAD software
Independently determine general approach and specific solutions to technical problems
Apply knowledge of production and operations processes to overall design
Interact with product design engineers to incorporate Design for Manufacturability principles
Interface with outside teams and individuals to ensure all solutions comply with product design specifications
Generate revision-controlled design and user documentation
Project manage and collaborate with fellow project stakeholders
Conduct training for equipment operators and maintenance technicians
Troubleshoot, support and continuously improve existing automated solutions
Qualifications:
Basic Qualifications
Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical, Industrial, or Manufacturing Engineering or related field AND a minimum of 3 year relevant experience OR an equivalent combination of education and experience
Excellent academics (cumulative GPA greater than or equal to 3.0 as a general rule)
Demonstrates full use of industry standards and procedures
Demonstrates proficiency and knowledge in use of engineering tools
Demonstrates beginner level programming abilities and experience
Demonstrates use of Lean techniques in process development
Demonstrates strong and effective verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills
Desired Qualifications
Outstanding academics (cumulative GPA greater than or equal to 3.5)
Previous work or internship experience in a manufacturing environment
Six Sigma Certification
Previous experience with AS9100 and NADCAP
Demonstrated Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications
Experience using 2D and 3D CAD design software (AutoCAD, Solidworks)
Design experience with fixturing, pneumatics, sensors and safety controls
Working knowledge of modern machining and rapid prototyping capabilities
