Medical Director

JOB SUMMARY:

Responsible for monitoring all clinical programs, new as well as existing. Review, schedules, and makes recommendations to the Hospital Administrator for changes, additions, etc. The Medical Director is involved in assessing, planning, linking, monitoring, and advocating for each patient assigned to the clinicians with specific departments. Develops and conducts programs to provide education for conditions and problems relating to drug and alcohol abuse. Participates in interdisciplinary treatment planning conferences. Responsible for the comprehensive delivery of quality mental health care specific to hospital protocols.

KEY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

Supervision of psychiatric care and practices, chairs MSO, Medical Executive Committee, and P&T committee, case conferences, second opinions, clinical leadership and representation of the MSO on other hospital committees and in hospital projects, task forces, and PI, represents the hospital's clinical position and efforts to the community and the state, review of referrals for admission, liaison with advocates and families, works closely with the hospital attorney. ·

Advocates for patients.·

Review cases, individual practice patterns, leads peer review, attends multidisciplinary teams and court proceedings, and is actively involved in clinically-based PI and best practice projects, quantitative and qualitative chart reviews, mortality reviews.·

Responsible for interviewing candidates and evaluating clinical competency; physician retention and ongoing review of the physicians' performance.·

Coordinates the monthly Medical Student rotation, providing orientation and lectures, arranges case conferences, outside speakers and training. Provides in-service training as needed to other departments.·

Provides direct psychiatric care to patients when needed. This includes evaluation, psychopharmacologic treatment, and psychotherapy, assessment for movement disorders, court evaluations, and discharges. All are done in compliance with state and federal regulations, and with age-specific competency and knowledge of patient safety.·

Demonstrates knowledge of all applicable nursing services and related policy and procedures including adequate knowledge of TJC standards as related to position. Proper utilization of medical equipment including glucometers. ·

Maintains clinic supplies and equipment for operations.·

Includes the use of seclusion and restraint and alternative interventions, documentation requirements, disaster and fire procedures, infection control and risk management.

Is sensitive to cultural diversity issues, treats patient as an individual, and considers the culture of the patient when providing care and treatment.

Knowledgeable about care and treatment needs of patients of different ages. Provides individualized care and treatment that is consistent with/sensitive to the age and life span developmental needs of each patient.

Must be able to apply principles of critical thinking to a variety of practical and emergent situations and accurately follow standardized procedures that may call for deviations.

Must be able to apply sound judgment beyond a specific set of instructions and apply knowledge to different factual situations.

Must be alert at all times; pay close attention to details.

Must be able to work under stress on a regular or continuous basis.

LEADERSHIP ABILITIES:

Takes a lead position on establishment and review of clinical policies, procedures, and protocols; TJC compliance, state procedures.

EDUCATION, TRAINING, EXPERIENCE AND LICENSING:

Education: Medical Doctor (MD) or Osteopathic Doctor (DO) from an accredited university.

Experience: Seven years of professional experience in providing services to persons with psychiatric disabilities, two years of which must have been at the administrative clinical level, assistant director or its equivalent.

Licenses/Certifications: Licensed in state of employment to practice medicine. Certification by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology

WORK ENVIRONMENT/TRAVEL:

This job primarily operates independently in a facility. This job is performed in a correctional facility, client site or counseling center including minimum, medium or maximum security levels. Employees are exposed to some level of risk and/or harm by inmates including exposure to blood borne pathogens. Employee is expected to work in accordance with all security rules and regulations to minimize the risk of danger and/or harm to themselves or other employees. This position may require travel depending on specific needs.
