Job Overview:

The Principal Estimator will be expected to plan and lead estimating effort on large, complex projects and all types of contracts; understand and apply standard estimating concepts, practices, and company procedures; provide guidance and leadership to project/proposal teams on estimated related topics.

The principal estimator will work relatively independently providing regular updates to and seeking guidance from the Estimating Director; lead/coordinate the efforts of discipline estimators; support other estimators in their estimates.

Responsibilities for Internal Candidates

Key Tasks and Responsibilities:

Work as part of a proposals team to complete estimates within the allotted time

Review invitations to tender, specifications, drawings and attend meetings to understand the scope of work and estimate requirements

Conduct estimate planning activities (produce written plan, support the development of the proposal schedule, identify resource requirements, etc.)

Lead and direct work of discipline estimators

Collaborate with other functions (Supply Chain Management, Engineering, Project Management, etc.) to manage the estimate schedule and the completion of estimate inputs

Compile estimate based on inputs from discipline estimators and other functions within the company

Provide evaluation of estimate compared to benchmarks/historical data

Calculate Escalation based on expected expenditures

Support project risk and opportunity management process by participating in project risk reviews and conducting the Monte Carlo simulations

Conduct cost review meetings with the project teams and local management

Present and defend the estimate in area proposal reviews

Maintain organized estimate files in accordance with area guidance

Create basis of estimate documents and presentations

Convert estimates into customer pricing formats

Qualifications for Internal Candidates

Essential Qualifications and Education:

Bachelor’s degree in engineering, construction, or business or a combination of education and relevant experience.

10-15 years Engineering and construction experience

Advanced level in Microsoft Office systems (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)

Ability to effectively communicate and present estimates to internal and external audiences

Ability to operate independently with minimal guidance

Knowledge of estimating best practices both for detailed and conceptual estimating

Detail oriented

Ability to prioritize and plan work efficiently and accurately to meet fixed deadlines
