Residuals Claims Rep

The Residuals Department of the Writers Guild of America, West, is currently seeking qualified applicants for the position of Claims Representative. This position is a full time, non-exempt (hourly) position with excellent comprehensive benefits package. Compensation is commensurate with experience.

The WGAW is an activist union representing thousands of writers of feature films and episodic content. Throughout its history, the WGAW has successfully secured creative rights, fair compensation, and premium benefits for its members, and recently reformed talent agency business practices to better align with the interests of writers. One way the WGAW builds power among writers is by providing them with the resources they need to understand, navigate, and confront challenges in the entertainment industry. In a landscape of corporate consolidation and technological change, an informed and organized membership has never been more important.

Under the supervision of the Residuals Collections Administrator, the Residuals Claims Representative is responsible for investigating and pursuing claims for unpaid residuals. The Residuals department ensures that writers are paid residuals due pursuant to the residual provisions of the WGA Basic Agreements from 1953 to present.

Essential Functions

1. Investigates potential violations of the residuals provisions of the collective bargaining agreement and pursues claims as part of the grievance and arbitration process.

2. Responsible for handling a residuals caseload involving the collection of residuals and interest.

3. Researches and reviews various agreements, including but not limited to writing contracts, assumption agreements, license and distribution agreements for reuse in markets such as television, theatrical and new media.

4. Obtains and analyzes financial records and residuals history to prepare detailed Excel spreadsheets of residuals owed.

5. Communicates with writers and companies throughout the investigation and resolution of the case.

6. Prepares and files arbitration claims for transfer to the Guild’s Legal Department.

7. Researches and reviews chain of title and signatory information to effect service of process on respondents.

8. Answers questions from members, agents, attorneys, labor and company representatives regarding residual obligations under the collective bargaining agreement.

9. Other duties as required.

Occupational Requirements

1. Bachelor’s degree required.

2. Entertainment industry, paralegal or claims experience preferred.

3. Contract compliance experience or good math skills a plus.

4. Must have excellent analytical and organization skills with attention to detail; strong oral and written communication skills; strong time management skills; and the ability to think on your feet, work independently, and handle adverse situations with diplomacy and authority.

5. Must be proficient in Microsoft Word, Outlook and Excel.

Range - $69-$82k

This position is not remote. You must work onsite 3 days per week, 2 days remote.
