Job Description

Under the clinical supervision of the charge nurse at the Department of Corrections (DOC), the Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) is directly responsible for, but is not limited to, carefully and accurately obtaining vital signs and initial patient history, performing routine nursing procedures (i.e. finger stick blood studies, urinalyses, pregnancy tests, and venipuncture, when appropriate), and conducting patient intake.

MAJOR DUTIES/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Essential and other important responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to the following:

Obtains vital signs and initial patient history.

Initiates the prescribed medical care plan on each patient.

Assists with obtaining consultations and referrals with other agencies (or appropriate delegations of these responsibilities).

Performs routine nursing procedures (i.e. finger stick blood studies, urinalyses, pregnancy tests, and venipuncture, when appropriate).

Administers and demonstrates immunization techniques and general knowledge of vaccination, where applicable.

Assists with clinical/medical procedures (i.e. pelvic exam, I&D, and wound care).

Records, in a timely manner, documentation of medication administration and/or treatment rendered.

Provides patient and family education.

Assures that adequate medications and supplies are ordered as appropriate to allow efficient health Center functioning.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Graduate of an accredited Practical Nursing School.

Licensed or eligibility in DC

One (1) year of experience in an ambulatory care setting, including experience with homeless or other special needs populations
