Under the direction of the HIM Supervisor, the HIM Clerk is responsible for performing routine clerical tasks to support the overall functions of the HIM Department.

Responsibilities

Retrieves discharge patient documents from nursing units and ancillary departments.

Reviews scanned documents from nursing unit for quality of image to include clarity, legibility and readability.

Scans and indexes loose reports/documents into Epic Media Manager tab; re-scans documents that do not meet quality standards.

Sorts and distributes mail.

Responds to requests for information from internal and external customers.

Photocopies medical records.

Coordinates the retrieval and printing of medical records from storage, as well as the storage, archival and record retention of documents and/or alternate media that cannot be scanned into the EPIC electronic medical record, e.g. fetal months strips, EKGs).

Maintains files and retrieves records from current filing area.

Controls, corrects, and resubmits data.

Assists in preparation of reports, issuing of reports and filing of data/reports.

Maintains and prepares departmental logs.

Performs messenger work as required.

Adheres to established Hospital and Department procedures and policies.

Perform other clerical duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education:

High School Graduate or Equivalent.

Experience:

One (1) year experience in an office or hospital environment.

Electronic record experience preferred.

Knowledge and Skills:

Proficient computer and keyboarding skills including data entry, word processing, and email.

High attention to detail and accuracy.

Works independently.

Good interpersonal written and verbal communication.

Strong customer service skills.

Basic ability to fully utilize BHMC's electronic record systems, equipment and other healthcare and billing systems relevant to this position.

Physical Requirements:

Position requires walking, prolonged sitting, bending, stooping and stretching.

Requires eye-hand coordination and manual dexterity sufficient to operate a keyboard, photocopy and other office equipment.

Position requires the ability to stoop, bend, lift, and carry items weighing up to 50 pounds.
