About this role

What will you be responsible for?

The Maintenance Technical Advisor (SMP) reports to the Process Maintenance Superintendent and assists in the day to day operation of the maintenance teams & project works. The Maintenance Technical Advisor (SMP) has responsibility for all aspects of the Merian operation’s processing plant and associated systems mechanical maintenance. This includes but is not limited to, team development, mechanical equipment selection, maintenance, repairs, and reporting.

Responsibilities include supporting the Process Maintenance Superintendent and the overall achievement of processing plant objectives by ensuring maximum availability of the plant while meeting all health, safety, and environmental requirements. The successful candidate will work closely with national skilled and semi-skilled trades personnel.

This is a hands on role requiring a significant amount of work to be carried out in the Process Plant as opposed to an office environment.

Your role will consist of

Here is a snapshot of what your day to day will look like:

Ensure that Safety and Environmental activities are integral parts of production standards.

The indirect supervision and mentoring of national process maintenance supervisors, trades people, and contract personnel.

Supervision of SMP project & remediation works.

Provide input to the scheduling and execution of weekly maintenance tasks

Take a leading role in the training & development of the national workforce and ensure the line of progression is determined and acted upon.

Ensure that maintenance department personnel are adequately trained and equipped to perform all assigned tasks.

Interact with and support other processing department groups to ensure optimal plant efficiency.

Attend meetings with Maintenance and Operations representatives.

Read, comprehend, and interpret equipment and system literature and technical data, Material Safety Data Sheets, product labeling, warning signs, instructional manuals, and system condition reports in support of the prevention of injury to personnel and the loss of property or production.

Provision of technical support, guidance, and tasking includes but is not limited to, the processing plant, the detoxification plant, the effluent treatment plant tailings and reclaim water systems, and conveying systems.

Lead by example in all aspects of the Newmont visions, values, and social responsibility.

Ensure the department’s compliance with the requirements of Newmont environmental, health, and Safety regulations.

Be a visible safety leader.

Your training, skills, and experience checklist

Here is what we would need to see from you!

Knowledge:

The candidate should possess, a mechanical trade’s certification from a recognized training institution and/or a technical diploma or degree in mechanical/maintenance engineering or extensive belt splicing, rubber lining and ceramic lining experience related field or an associated mining related maintenance function.

The candidate must have demonstrated leadership capabilities.

Must have sound computerized maintenance management knowledge ( preferably SAP)

Fluent English speaker (written and spoken), dutch preferred.

Experience:

The candidate will preferably have had cross cultural work experience in a remote operation and/or a developing country (Minimum 5 years of Mechanical Maintenance)

The candidate must have had significant training, coaching and overall supervision experience, especially with an initially relatively inexperienced workforce, with sound training development and delivery experience.

The Technical Advisor must have strong technical knowledge and at least 3 years of advanced leadership experience in large scale open pit mining and milling operations or construction projects and a minimum of 10 years of overall experience in a related field.

The candidate will preferably have had experience with fabrication works associated with the maintenance of a large scale processing facilities.

Skills and Abilities:

Demonstrated strong verbal and written communication skills.

Must have the ability to effectively utilize Microsoft Word and Excel applications

Strong Computerized Maintenance management systems ( preferably SAP)

Weld inspection certifications are highly regarded

Working Conditions

Where you will be located!

This position is located at Merian, project sites. Merian is a remote site located in a warm, humid tropical rainforest environment

The Merian mine is located in North-eastern Suriname, approx. 98 kilometers southeast of the capital city of Paramaribo; 60 kilometers south of Moengo.

Accommodation is in a camp/village environment near the workplace

Suriname has a tropical climate with dry and two rainy seasons with anticipated tropical rainfall of 1.5m to 2.5m of rain per year.

This is an expat position, the individual is required to work 6 weeks at the site, 3 weeks off fly-in fly-out arrangement, being based ideally in the Americas or Europe. The incumbent is expected to spend most of her/his time in the field, with some office work.
