Main purpose of position
Currently we are looking for a Civil Engineering Manager in Cape Town, South Africa to be part of our global team working together towards our vision – Improving our future. As our Civil Engineering Manager, you will be responsible for the following main processes: Manage the civil engineering discipline regionally and deliver high quality and cost-efficient concepts and solutions for business development opportunities and construction projects within ground mounted PV, floating PV and wind power.
Manage the progress of geotechnical, hydrological, civil, structural technical deliverables for our EPC projects regionally. Manage the technical resources in region.
Main responsibilities:
Coordinate the civil engineering activities regionally
Ensure that the right scope and analysis is conducted to support new concepts, business development and project activities
Establish, maintain and improve relevant business process
Manage our regional team within the civil engineering discipline
Operate in matrix environment
Identify country specific Civil risks and constraints
Develop civil engineering concepts and designs for new project opportunities
Piling concepts and solutions under different soil, wind and ground water conditions
Cost effective fit-for-purpose ground mounted PV substructures and foundations
Floating PV, Wind and P2X jettyless terminal anchoring and mooring systems
Wind power foundation, tower and anchor cage designs
Manage progress on engineering deliverables in structuring- and execution phase on EPC projects globally
Support Execution Team with planning and alignment of technical aspects of the project
Ensure that all civil design information identified throughout the structuring phase is implemented in the detail designs in a timely matter to support construction and procurement activities
Review of Pull-out tests strategy and methodology during development or structuring phase
Review design change request or proposals in the event of deviations
Support in project close out phase towards TTO
Support to Operation and Maintenance team
Support to resolve all civil engineering related matters identified during operations
Assist with Civil related OPEX assumptions for the respective technologies
Promote proactive maintenance of civil infrastructure
Identify and qualify partners and suppliers for civil related works together with our SCM team
Compilation and evaluation of RFP documents (technical specifications and bill of quantities), then lead technical engagement with suppliers to clarity the responses
Establish and follow-up frame agreements with consultants
Compilation and review of civil engineering related tender and detailed design contracts
Compilation and review of logistics and erection/construction contractual documents
Manage in Country Civil Engineering Supervisors and Junior Engineers
Support technical growth of site and junior engineers
Mentor junior engineers for professional registration
Conduct internal technical discussion to transfer skills to the Civil Team
Important role interfaces:
The Engineering Manager is part of Regional Engineering management team
Work closely with Senior Engineering Manager and global team
Follow-up engineering progress on projects regionally by working with regional Project Managers and Project Technical Managers
Provide continuous input towards improvement and optimisation of the operating system
Overview of renewable energy technologies and energy storage solutions. Market trends, different players, business models
Leading expert in relevant engineering disciplines (civil, wind, solar, hydro, BESS). Understanding of the integration of technologies into the system designs.
Use, implementation, continuous improvement and optimization of the operating system (processes, procedures, templates and tools)
Understand all relevant contracts (FIM, EPC, O&M, Grid Connection, PPA, etc) and ensure compliance with all contractual requirements
Initiate manage and drive implementation of projects or processes in line with agreed project charter and aligned with expectations for time, quality and costs.
Overview of cost drivers in EPC projects, cost benchmarks, market trends, cost sensitivity etc.
Ability to prepare reports in line with relevant quality requirements and communicate/ present findings in a good way, adapted to the audience of the report/presentation.
Communicate effectively with other departments, external parties such as suppliers, contractors, lenders and management
Qualifications and competencies
Civil Engineering Degree (B.Eng); Master’s Degree in Civil Engineering
Professional Engineering Registration (or similar Chartered Engineer registration)
Design management of complex Civil infrastructure (foundations, drainage, roads and buildings)
Understanding of Resident Engineer management of complex Infrastructure projects
Sound knowledge of CAD knowledge and AutoCAD civil 3D (or similar numerical modelling software)
10+ years civil engineering experience
5+ years Solar and Wind energy experience
Foundation design/Geotechnical Investigations or hydrological modelling/ drainage design experience
Roads/pavement or Structural design analysis and bending schedules
Ideal: Hydroelectric Power experience
Offshore structural/geotechnical design
Floating PV/ marine design experience
Friction and end bearing Pile design experience
Culvert sizing and Channel design
Slope stability and Retaining wall design
An excellent knowledge of MS Office
Sound knowledge of GIS software
Language: Fluent both written and spoken in English
Valid driver's license and passport
