Apprentice: Level 1

Painter, Industrial Coating and Lining Application Specialist

All levels of Apprenticeship will require the NCCER Core credential. The NCCER Core credential consists of the following:

Basic Safety-

Identify, inspect and don the required types of PPE for site safety. Properly set up, climb/descend an extension ladder. Properly don and use personal fall protection equipment. Identify/describe/inspect the use of electrical power cords and GFCI devices.

Hand Tools-

Visually inspect and demonstrate the safe/proper use of a minimum of five of the following tools to determine if they are safe to use: measuring tape, hammer, pliers, ratchet/socket wrench, hand saw, square, level, wire cutters, utility knife.

Power Tools-

Visually inspect and demonstrate the safe/proper use of electric and battery powered drill, circular saw, reciprocating saw, grinder, sander, electric bristle blaster.

Basic Rigging-

Demonstrate the proper ASME Emergency Stop hand signal.

Basic Communication Skills-

Perform a given task after listening to oral instructions. Fill out a JHA provided by your instructor. Read and interpret a set of instructions for properly donning a safety harness and then orally instruct another person on how to don the harness.

Introduction to Materials Handling-

Demonstrate safe manual lifting techniques. Demonstrate how to tie two of the following common knots.

Craft Requirements:

Industrial Coating Safety

Demonstrate lockout/tagout procedures. Demonstrate proper donning of a personal fall arrest system. Identify intrinsically safe/explosion-proof equipment and devices. Read and understand a MSDS.

Work Planning and Quality Control

Follow and execute a work plan, including documentation of all processes. Demonstrate ability to complete QA/QC paperwork. Calculate dry film thickness (DFT).

Health and Safety, Debris

Management, Containment, and Ventilation

Construct a containment system for a specific application. Install ventilation and humidification or dehumidification systems. Using SSPC Guide 6, test the effectiveness of a given containment structure. Install containment around protrusions. Perform a repair on a perforated area.

Apprentice: Level 1

Insulation Worker

All levels of Apprenticeship will require the NCCER Core credential. The NCCER Core credential consists of the following:

Trade Orientation/Materials and Storage-

Identify the common types of insulation materials and their applications. Describe/demonstrate proper handling and storage of each.

Prints and Specifications-

Using a sample set of drawings, identify: Plan view, Elevation view, Isometric, Flow diagram. Using a sample specification, identify: The type of base, securement, and finish materials required for the job, the method of application for these materials, the use of any approved alternate procedures or materials.

Trade Tools-

Identify the six essential tools needed to start work and demonstrate the safe use of each. Describe the appropriate PPE applicable to insulation work. Demonstrate the safety procedures for using common hand tools and power tools like Trowels, brushes, knives, scissors, sewing equipment, stapling guns, caulking guns, power saws, welding machines, compressors.

Selection and measurement of common industrial material-

Types and uses of various insulating materials, including: Fiberglass, foam, calcium silicate (magnesia), ceramic wool, mineral, wool, rock wool, cellular glass. Measurement, layout, and cutting of material for both straight and curved surfaces.

Apprentice: Level 1

Scaffold Erector

All levels of Apprenticeship will require the NCCER Core credential. The NCCER Core credential consists of the following:

Understand/demonstrate math calculations of scaffold loads, live loads, concentrated loads and area loads.

Supported Scaffolds, Mobile Scaffolds, Suspension Scaffolds

Demonstrate the ability to Safely/properly erect pin-lock system scaffolding and Safely/properly erect tube & coupler scaffolding, Safely/properly erect and use mobile scaffolding. Identify the different types of powered and manually propelled mobile scaffolds and demonstrate the safe/proper erection and operation of each.
