Job Description

About Skyven

At Skyven Technologies, we have developed a revolutionary heat pump technology to decarbonize industrial heat. We sell this technology through an innovative Energy-as-a-Service model that saves our customers money with no capital outlay. We are hiring a Principal Mechanical Engineer to be part of the Product Development team. This is an opportunity to make a real impact at an innovative and growing climate tech company.

Industrial heat is responsible for roughly 20% of global CO2 emissions. That’s roughly equivalent to emissions generated by all transportation (including land, sea, and air) and is a compelling business opportunity – it will take an estimated $3.7 trillion in capital investment to decarbonize the sector by 2050. Skyven is at the forefront of this transformation and has recently achieved a significant milestone by being selected for a $145M investment from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to accelerate the deployment of our state-of-the-art Skyven Arcturus steam-generating heat pumps (SGHPs) at manufacturing facilities nationwide, revolutionizing how we address energy needs while combating climate change.

About the Role

In this role, you’ll transform Skyven’s conceptual design and detailed component selections into a completely detailed product ready for procurement and construction. Skyven’s heat pump challenges the conventions of typical, one-off, large industrial systems. Therefore, we need a mechanical engineering leader who understands the analysis requirements of a traditional EPC stick-built design and the productization methods done by product OEMs and is excited to help Skyven blend these two things into a robust product platform.

You’ll be working alongside the rest of our very experienced product development engineers to create execution methods that productize the detailed engineering deliverables, enabling delivery of steam-generating heat pump technology to a wide range of applications in our customer pipeline.

You would join our new product development team in the middle of the specification engineering phase of our product development lifecycle and experience a high-energy environment that will rapidly progress into integration engineering and pre-manufacturing.

Responsibilities

Review preliminary component and material specifications and help drive final selections for the product platform.

Identify gaps in engineering specification plans and propose new specifications or refinements to resolve those gaps.

Recommend modifications to component and material specifications to drive system standardization, reliability, and scalability.

Develop documentation related to detailed design processes to create standard operating procedures (SOP).

Identify and apply relevant national, state, and local codes to specification and design engineering work.

Create internal tools and methodology to enable scalable delivery for the creation of detailed design engineering deliverables.

Performs all detailed design calculations related to non-electrical systems.

Develop tools to allow engineering calculations to scale with lower manpower over time.

Provides subject matter expert (SME) guidance to the entire team on mechanical engineering topics, including piping, material science, mechanical components, non-structural stress analysis, and thermoscience.

Validates conceptual product development designs, identifies issues, and advises augmentation.

Reviews all technical work created by specification engineers on non-electrical selections for technical accuracy.

Reviews all technical work and deliverables created by mechanical designers for technical accuracy.

Create detailed design deliverables via Solidworks and other methods.

Performs technical reviews on vendor documents and drawing submittals for accuracy and adherence to Skyven specifications.

Creates lifecycle estimates on components and systems using analytical methods.

Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or related subspecialty.

10+ years of post-graduate work experience in the detailed engineering of industrial scale system designs, very large commercial system designs, manufacturing plant design, process plant design, or new product development of modular industrial systems.

Productization mindset and understanding of modular and productized industrial system design.

Background must include experience in high-temperature process water, steam, and lubrication oil.

Knowledge and experience applying relevant third-party engineering standards and codes for the United States and Canada. I.e ASTM, ASME B31, ASME BPVC, ANSI, etc.

Intermediate-level experience using Solidworks.

Basic experience using Autocad, Autocad Electrical, or Autocad Plant3D.

Past experience working in a PDM environment.

Able to check and confirm technical accuracy of pipe stress and pipe support analysis performed by third party engineering firms.

Experience performing fatigue analysis on components and systems, including low cycle fatigue.

Preferred

Masters of Science in Engineering or Applied Physics.

Active Professional Engineer license for the United States or Canada (PE. or P.Eng)

Expert level experience in Solidworks as applied to industrial systems and product families with a large number of configurations.

Intermediate level or higher user of Autocad or Autocad electrical

Past experience with an Engineering, Procurement, Construction (EPC) firm or Mechanical, Electrical, and Plumbing (MEP) firm leading detailed system or subsystem design on $20MM-$50MM+ steam and hot process water systems.

Prior experience setting up and implementing a new MRPII system or Solidworks PDM.

Previous industrial new product development experience.

Component/material sourcing experience or supply chain management experience.

Able to perform object-oriented programming at an intermediate level in a common language (python, C++, etc) or IEC 61131-3 (ST+FBD).

Able to setup, manipulate, and apply SQL databases for daily work on engineering and CAD.

Adept with using MATLAB as either a daily engineering tool or capable of creating new engineering tools in MATLAB.

Experience creating pipe stress analysis and pipe support design using a software platform comparable to Cesar II or AutoPIPE

Experience designing heat exchangers using HTRI software suite.

Experience creating FEA analysis on heat exchangers, fluid systems, or mechanical systems using a software platform comparable to ANSYS or COMSOL.

Experience creating fluid flow analysis using a software platform comparable to Pipe Flow, FLUIDFLOW, or AFT Fathom
