WHAT YOU'LL DO:

Ohio Department of Public Safety - Ohio State Highway Patrol

Report In Location - 1583 Alum Creek Drive, Columbus 43209

Hours Worked - 8:00AM to 5:00PM; MAY BE SUBJECT TO AFTER-HOURS CALL IN

Under direct supervision of the Highway Patrol Lieutenant, within the Ohio State Highway Patrol (OSHP), Crime Lab, processes, examines, & preserves (e.g. intake, storage, chain of custody) all evidence & property submissions (e.g. latent prints, blood, urine, drugs, weapons, petroleum products, alcohol, clothing, glass, hazardous &/or bio-hazardous materials) collected from crime scenes or hazardous situations & submitted to laboratory by internal &/or external law enforcement officers to aid in criminal prosecutions in accordance with OSHP Policies & Procedures guided by the American Society of Crime Lab Directors/Laboratory Accreditation Board (ASCLD), Ohio Department of Health, internal control procedures & laboratory best practices to ensure the integrity & safety of evidence handling (e.g. analyzes evidence receipt form for incoming evidence submissions to ensure key information is not missing; ensures all evidence &/or property is properly stored, warehoused, & packaged); Oversees evidence management in the laboratory information management system (e. g. verify classification & accuracy of entries, enter updates &/or corrections as needed, maintains history of evidence submissions & releases; responsible for physical management (e.g. packaging, filing, shelving, & inventorying all evidence submissions)); Examine, verify, & validate (e.g. reviewing court orders, case numbers, defendant name, lab number, etc.) requests for destruction of evidence &/or property; Ensures all records & related paperwork concerning evidence disposal, release, &/or handling, is accurate & completed in accordance with applicable state statutes & departmental policies & procedures & generates computerized reports of movement & handling of evidence.

Acts as liaison with county, city &/or state courts &/or prosecutors' offices in order to respond to inquiries via phone, fax, in person, & written &/or electronic correspondence received from various statewide entities within the law enforcement community (e.g. county courts, prosecutors, & internal &/or external law enforcement personnel) regarding evidence results, submissions, testing, procedures, fees, instrument maintenance & support, etc.; Manages subpoenas, court assignments, & the court calendar for Crime Lab staff; Testifies before courts concerning integrity of evidence chain of custody & all matters related to the evidence.

Completes special projects, studies, & reporting to help streamline or improve laboratory policies & procedures & represents laboratory with internal &/or external customers; Ensures strict compliance with OSHP Policies & Procedures & the American Society of Crime Laboratory Directors/ Laboratory Accreditation Board (e.g. complete assignments in accordance with accreditation standard, successfully complete quality control audits, inventories, etc.). Perform other related duties as assigned.

Formal education in arithmetic that includes calculating fractions, decimals & percentages & in reading, writing & speaking English;

& 12 mos. exp. working in a forensic laboratory, biology, medical office laboratory or chemistry laboratory, law enforcement agency or legal environment;

& 6 mos. trg. or exp. in inventory control (e.g. receiving, storing & dispensing of materials).
